sold my soul to the devil, apparently

Definitely some good and bad things about this weekend. Friday our team went out to lunch together for amazing Thai food, and then paladin and I were going to get dinner at a taco place, but things sort of fell apart from there - I missed my stop on the train because I was way too engaged reading Susan Kaye Quinn's Third Daughter (I had just hit the OH SHIT part of the plot at the end), so I ended up walking down from the next stop in a very light drizzle. The taco place was in fact closed (right now it seems they're only open for lunch) so we went to Chipotle, but on the way back to the car, one of my earrings (a pair of dangly dichroic glass squares that Georgann had given me years ago) made a break for it. Right into a sidewalk grate. Gone forever. :(

Yesterday I overlsept a little and was a bit late for my hair appointment, and then I went to get cat food and do the groceries. I got home and then paladin and I shotgunned the entire season of Lucifer in one sitting, basically pausing to make dinner, and fell into bed at 1 am. (More on this in a sec.)

Today I spent some time on FF14 with
ourtinymoments and
rabbitprint, and called my mom, and did a ton of laundry, and then I accidentally a two-hour nap on the couch because Zelda crawled on my chest and that happened, so I guess I'm staying up late playing video games because I know I'm not going to sleep if I go to bed at a normal hour.

ANYWAY. Lucifer. Let's talk about Lucifer.

This will mostly be enthusiastic squawking about theemes, no specific episode spoilers!

Okay. So. This is based on the Vertigo comics Lucifer, whom I'd only experienced in Sandman (though spreadnparanoia offered to lend me the comics and apparently I need to do that now). But basically it has Lucifer who has decided to fuck off from his whole hell gig and come to Los Angeles to live his own life, whereupon he meets Chloe Decker, a detective on the LAPD. The show is part police procedural and part supernatural plot, and the two don't always mix, and it's gloriously tailored to me. Give me a snarky, entirely too fabulous British guy and a cast of excellent characters and then have the lord of hell turn out to have a penchant not just for punishing the evil but perhaps actively seeking justice, and you have a recipe for me sitting on the couch periodically repeating "I can't even" as I shotgun an entire season.

It ends up being a bit like Castle, but substantially better-written and with better characters, and more on the long-term plot/less directly police procedural. Chloe is a delight; Lucifer is made of my buttons; Mazikeen is FUCKING GREAT; Amenadiel is goddamn fantastic (I was predisposed because I love DB Woodside, but fucking seriously.) There's Linda, a psychologist who's trying to help Lucifer figure out all his shit (and oh god does he have shit to figure out.) There's Dan, Chloe's (currently separated) husband, who I started out grudgingly respecting and then just fell head over heels for. The back half of the season is a fucking glorious mirror-arc for Lucifer and Amenadiel in a way that made me squeak out loud a lot. So much about this show is so great!

I'm not sure I've ever had a TV fandom. (I sort of dip my toe into reading the MCU, but I don't write it, and that's as close as I've ever been to having a live-action fandom.) I am apparently about to have a live-action fandom. I'm not sure what to do with this information, but holy shit, holy shit, I love this show. I'm kind of glad we waited until now to watch it because it means more is coming soon!!

Anyway. Yeah. what a fucking great show. It included, verbatim, Lucifer's glorious speech from Sandman right before he turns the last key to Hell and gives it to Morpheus, and a bunch of other great moments. The relationship between Lucifer and Chloe is so great and so solid and Lucifer having zero fucking idea what to do with people who don't fall at his feet is so good. Mazikeen!! MAZIKEEN. Chloe is fucking great. I'm repeating myself because I honestly can't say much more without too many spoilers but ahhhhhhhh I'm so glad I watched this.
