2012 Goals Roundup, 2013 Goals

Dec 30, 2012 11:52

Hey, it's the end of the year again! Time to get started on goal roundups. (I actually made my life way easier for the fic roundup, and as is now my tradition, I am going to post that on January 1.)

December Goals

January goals will be at the end of the post. I know I'm a couple days early on December, but I don't really see me accomplishing much of meaning between now and the end of Monday, though I could always surprise myself.

Writing
* Take two weeks off. In full.
* Then pick up at about 1k/day starting on the 15th, if I feel recovered enough.
* Write what I want to. If that means incredibly self-indulgent Persona 3 senpai cuddlepile, great. If it's something I could publish and make money from, also great. No judgment here.

I apparently was not feeling recovered enough for fiction, because I've written zero words this month that were fiction. On the other hand, I did a lot with DW/LJ and recs, so I'm feeling okay with that.

Video Games
* Play as much Glitch as I can before it shuts down (but don't let it be a chore)
* Beat three games, given that I have at least six hanging around with enough progress to do so in a month (especially given the week off I have around Christmas.)

I did! I beat Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Hexyz Force, and Dust: An Elysian Tail. I have played very few games during this week off, but I got a lot of gaming in before that :)

Mind/Body/Spirit
* Remember that it's okay to tell people that I am having headbees and cannot deal with things right now.
* Work on blaming myself less for the headbees and finding ways around them instead.

I think I did this, although December has been a remarkably low-headbees month.

Money
In December, I will:
* Put away a total of $400 in a savings account for the wedding ($200 left over from November, $200 in December)
* Do Christmas shopping only on cash-in-hand (i.e. my usual categories of spending money will be shifted to presents instead.)
* Do New Year's party shopping only on cash-in-hand (shift grocery funds that way)

DONE.

2012 Goals, and their Outcomes

Writing
* Write 150,000 words (yeah, I signed up for
getyourwordsout again.)
* Finish the novel from the 2010/2011 NaNo adventure, and get sample chapters to an agent.
* Finally get into Dragon Age fandom instead of lurking insecurely around the edges.
* Be a more active fandom participant generally; reading, writing, recs, comments.
* Finish Every Light (yeah yeah I know I know.)

Okay. So. My end wordcount for the year (excluding my various December posts and stuff because I utterly forgot to record them) is 156,000. I also finished the NaNo novel draft, though I did not send chapters to an agent (because I need to rip out some things and revise the draft considerably, but at least I know what those revisions need to be.) I did write some things for Dragon Age, and read/commented a lot. I've been a lot better fandom participant, though still not up to the standards I want. and I finished Every Light!

5/6 complete. A winner is me.

Video Games
"Beat more than I buy" is working out for me! Slowly, but it's getting there. I'm going to stick with that, and add: I want to beat at least two of my older (i.e. PS1 or PS2 era) games.

A big old NOPE. Here is my game list for 2012 (star indicates "did all the things" in addition to "beat final boss"):

Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (PSP)*
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (DS)

Dragon Fantasy (Mac)

Removed from the Accounting
Class of Heroes (PSP)

Steam was kind of a massive destructive force for me; I've not even added some of the more recent sale things to that list. I've made some significant progress in FF Dimensions and in Chrono Cross, but not in anything else. Which also means I didn't beat two PSX-or-earlier era games. Backloggery says I am at -5, though that number is dodgy because it counts beaten and completed separately if I log them separately. On the other hand, in 2012 I did a lot better at only playing things when I wanted to play them. That's an important lesson to learn. About which more shortly.

Mind/Body/Spirit
* Really take charge of mental health issues; see about getting a therapist; ask about ways to deal with my anxiety.
* Continue taking vitamins and determine if there are other, addressable physical causes.
* Develop a workout routine.
* Set aside time for religious practice and meditation.
* Be kinder to myself. I tend to judge myself really, really harshly (my double standard for myself is epic) and I want to be more mindful of how I treat me, because holy shit, if I saw someone treating one of my friends the way I tend to treat myself, I would be ripping that person several new assholes. I need to remember that I am my friend, too, and treat myself accordingly.

I did get a therapist. I was really bad about taking vitamins, working out, and doing religious practice. I have been moderately kinder to myself, though not as much as I ought. 2/5: lots of room for improvement.

Money and Career Skills
* Pay off my car. (!!!)
* Make progress on other debts.
* Learn Ruby on Rails.

I paid off my car, one year early. I kept one credit card at zero for most of the year. I am making progress on other debts, though the sudden addition of a new thing to save for is making that harder. I started learning Ruby on Rails, though I didn't get to much significant progress. 1.5/3?

Overall
I've had worse years, goal-wise, but I'm so proud of the writing goals that I'm calling it a net win. Also, I made progress on most things even when I didn't succeed. (See also: being kinder to myself.)

2013 Goals!

I'm keeping the themed-goal format, because I really enjoy it and it seems to work well for me.

Video Games
* Keep up with
moogle_university.
* Beat more than I buy; games beaten for MU don't count.

There aren't a lot of games coming out next year that I really want, but Moogle U is going to take up a lot of my time. So this seems like a reasonable balance.

Writing
* Write 200,000 words for
getyourwordsout.
* Edit and post Every Light.
* Edit and polish the 2010/2011 NaNo Novel.
* Finish the 2012 NaNo novel.
* Write the third book in the trilogy that I started in 2010 NaNo.
* Pitch the aforementioned three to an agent.
* Write the assassin-and-knight adventures for NaNo 2013.
* Post 1K of fic per month.

Yes. This is extremely ambitious. I am aiming for extremely ambitious. Because I want to do this.

Money
* Save $200/month toward the wedding; more in three-paycheck months.
* Pay half of my now-lowest card ($9.5K, for a balance of not more than $5K at the end of the year.)

The first one will be easy. The second will be hard. I'm going to try anyway.

Self
* Continue to improve handling my anxiety.
* Improve my physical shape; I don't care about weight but I want to be better at physical activity.
* Get all my ducks in a row for the wedding.
* Actual spiritual practice. High Holiday rituals and prayer on Esbats.
* Improve my time management; instead of derping around on the Internet because I can't decide what to do, pick something and start it. If I get bored and switch, that's okay. Just start something.
* One hour a week of French study outside class (at least through June).
* Become better at answering emails and reading things in a timely fashion.
* More posting and interaction on Dreamwidth. Consistently. At least one meaningful post a week outside Moogle U; comment more!
* Stop making everything a chore.

That last one is big, because I tend to make everything - including hobbies, leisure activities, and other stuff that is supposed to be fun - into chores I must plow through. I guess this could be better summed up as "live in the moment."

My goals for 2013 are ambitious, but I want to stretch myself and see what I'm really capable of accomplishing when I try. I'm thirty; it's about damn time I got my shit together and tried to get things done other than sort of wafting through life.

I also want to keep a monthly tally for at least the games, writing, and money goals as progress toward the end; I'm still bad at losing the forest for the trees.

January 2013 Goals

Video Games
* Beat either Final Fantasy Dimensions or Chrono Cross.
* Beat FF1 for Moogle U; minimum of two posts about it as I'm doing so.

Writing
* 15K overall words; DW/Moogle U posts count.
* (Contingent on beta response) Post Chapters 1-3 of Every Light.
* Finish the last two scenes of Trilogy Part 1; smooth out the edges from ripping out the stuff that belonged in Part 2. Send to beta readers.

Money
* Save $200 for the wedding.
* Pay for my French class tuition in cash.

Self
* Once a week, 20 minutes of step aerobics (while catching up on TiVo; two birds, one stone!)
* Settle on a place and a date for the wedding; attend an expo to see the dress I think might be perfect.
* One DW post a week outside of MU. Don't let myself get more than 3 days behind on reading.
* Write the ritual I will use for Imbolc.
* One hour a week of French study outside class.
* Get at least one inbox to fewer than ten.
