Section II: The Student

Name: Zael Apollo

Age: 17

Club Affiliation: Numeros

Description:

Zael is about average height for his age, and he is very slender in build. He wears his pink (‘strawberry blond’ he insists) hair loose over his shoulders, but whenever he is working in the chemistry lab, he tends to put clips in it to keep it out of his face. His most prominent physical trait are his glasses, which make him look rather distinguished, though some tend to easily categorize him as a nerd because of them. He is very neat and anal about his uniform and always wears his tie in a perfect Windsor knot and the buttons done up to the very top.

Everything about his body language is rather calm and restrained. He does not take to panic easily, nor does he ever (openly) question his superiors. For the most part, he is very loyal and quiet, which leaves a lot of questions about his true nature. In his family, he is known as the resident genius middle child, whom his parents can always count on to bring home perfect grades and to always do his chores. He doesn’t have many friends nor does he associate with others outside of Numeros. His serious nature is very off-putting and causes other people to avoid him, which suits him just fine.

His father is a wealthy radiologist and often pressures him to follow the same vein, though Zael secretly harbors fantasies about joining the Espada and practicing something as elegant and physically demanding as fencing. However, expectations placed on him keep him in the Numeros . He tries not to let his resentment show, but occasionally, he lets some of the more dangerous aspects of his personality slip out. Also, he can sometimes be seen watching the Espada from afar and taking notes about the students involved in the club.

His favorite place to be is in the school laboratories since his best subject is chemistry. He enjoys the scent of formaldehyde and most chemicals, but takes very good care to make sure the stench doesn’t cling to his body or his uniform. Since chemistry involves a lot of math, he excels in that subject, as well, taking extreme comfort in the absolute.

Situation:

Zael often spends more time at school, chemistry labs, or in the library than at home, and as a result, he is not very close to his family at all. He is the middle child of three and the only boy. Both his sisters are completely opposite to him in personality and generally tease him about being reticent and “dorky”. His father is a very strict man but generally allows Zael to do as he pleases. Because of the demands of his advanced courses and club activities, Zael does not have time for a part-time job, or so he claims. He just prefers to use his free time reading whimsical things that his father would rather not have him read or watching fencing tournaments for his own amusement and collecting data on the top ten Espada. He keeps all his notes on his laptop and doesn’t share his information with anyone.

The library was completely empty by late afternoon save for the librarian who had her meticulous bun pulled tightly behind her head and her glasses delicately hanging off the bridge of her nose. Zael’s eyes shifted from her haggard face to the clock again before refocusing on the program open in front of him. There was nothing more tedious than inputting data into the PCXMC program to calculate correct patient doses for x-ray exams. It was a crucial part of the project he was working on for Advanced Anatomy, but his eyes would glaze over every couple of minutes, and he’d find himself staring at inane objects, instead, such as the pencil left precariously on the table or the book on ethnographies of aboriginal Australia lying open on page 163.

His fingers started drumming impatiently on the table, a nervous habit he tried to rid himself of. He had plenty of other random nervous tics that usually manifested themselves whenever he was alone and bored. Truly, he would have rather liked to be back in the lab, working on the new faunal assemblages he acquired from a mauled over deer he found on the road, but his assignment was more pressing. It was due in only three weeks, after all.

The Espada were supposedly meeting for practice that very afternoon, too. Their practices tender to be very demanding and grueling he’d heard, and a part of him desired to abandon his library books for a moment and try to peak in on them.

He ignored the juvenility of that thought immediately. Dawdling on daydreams was for those who couldn’t control themselves. He needed to focus on his work. This project was worth approximately 20% of his grade. He could not let his GPA falter because he spent too much time drifting in his idle thoughts instead of working.

With a quick adjustment of his glasses, Zael straightened his posture and resumed typing on his laptop, ignoring the skewed glances the librarian threw his way. It probably meant the library was going to close soon, but he needed to finish at least half of his data input before heading home for the night.
