Monday the 12th after being sick for a couple of weeks I went to see the Doctor. She did an extremely minimal exam and said I had a sinus infection, which I’m not sure I agree with. She prescribed me some antibiotics and medication for cough. I’d been having some irritation in my eye so she wanted to put me on quarters in case it was pink eye, but I refused the quarters because I didn’t think CPT P would be very happy about me staying home that day. That day someone came in to register their pet, which was a kitten. I asked if he brought the kitten with him and he said no, which was fine, I just wanted to see it. After he left he came back a few minutes later with the kitten which made me very happy, the kitten was an adorable little gray tabby.
Later on I faxed a leave form up to Fort Meade for approval because I wanted to take leave the week of my birthday. I got a call back saying we don’t do paper leave forms anymore, that I had to submit it online. I was annoyed by this because no one had told me. So I went online and tried to submit my leave form but as it turns out my ID card wasn’t working for the ID card login. This was new, it had been working last week. So now I had to get a new ID card in order to submit my leave form. I asked if I could just submit the paper ones since I probably wouldn’t have time to get a new ID this week and they said they can’t process paper leave forms anymore, which is stupid because what happens if the computers go down?
In the afternoon we did dental radiographs on Dandy, a dog who keeps coming in because he has severe dental disease. He’s a sweet dog, it’s a shame he has this.
Tuesday was a clinic day.
Wednesday we had a surgery scheduled, and of course at the last minute MAJ F decided she needed us to take radiographs of her dog, as if we didn’t have anything better to do. So we did that and started late on the surgery, a spay and lump removal on a yorkie. That little thing was hell to get an IV in. Later that day we had MWD Hunter come in for his physical. They’re finally going to retire him which is good, they’ve been trying off and on to retire him since 2005 because he has hip and back problems, but then someone always made the argument that he works fine.
Thursday I had to drive the GOV by myself on the parkway for the first time. It wasn’t too bad driving up, though I was nervous since I’d never driven on the busy highway before by myself. I had to drive to Meade for training and found out while I was there that I had to help out with the inauguration support for the working dogs. I was a little annoyed because I had already volunteered and then been told I wasn’t doing it, so I wasn’t expecting them to change their mind at the last minute. After training the drive back to Andrews was terrible, traffic was much worse and I nearly side-swiped the van against a concrete wall while coming off a ramp because I had to look over my shoulder to merge but the van has terrible visibility so I had to look too long and nearly swerved into a wall. I was really angry that they made me drive this way by myself, I don’t think I’m nearly experienced enough for that.
I had time to go to the ID card place this day. After taking a break at the clinic to calm down after the ride back I headed over there. 3 hours later I had a new ID. I went over to my dorm room to see if it would work as my room key, which it didn’t, and the dorm manager said they wouldn’t be able to fix it until tomorrow which meant for the rest of that day I’d have to climb in through the window.
Do you know how suspicious it looks when an Army person is breaking into an Air Force dorm room? Especially since I’m the only Army person in the dorms.
Friday was a busy day. We had clinic all day, and SSG P came down, The fire safety guy was there to tell us about all our fire hazards and such, and they kept interrupting me in between appointments to tell me things since I’m the acting NCO, and SSG P felt it was important for me to hear them. Then the drug inventory person called to schedule a time to count the controlled drugs. I told her what days we had available and she got pissed off, saying she couldn’t do any of those days and we should make this a priority and blah blah, like I can help what we already had planned. She should have done this sooner. Finally she agreed to come that day, which meant I was going to be counting drugs instead of eating lunch.
When lunch time came around the controlled drug woman was late, so I went over to the dorm and had my ID coded for my room key. She was finally there when I got back so we spent most of my lunch break counting drugs. Also during lunch public health dropped off 2 new bite reports, so I had to act on those. One of them involved a working dog from Ft. Myer, but since everyone else except Andrews was off that day I couldn’t get them to answer the phone. (Everyone else was off because it’s supposed to be a 4 day weekend, but since we were in the DC area we got Tuesday off for Inauguration and we can’t have 5 consecutive days off, even though Belvoir went ahead and took 5 days anyway.)
I had a lucky break in the afternoon, of the 6 appointments I had scheduled only 2 showed up so I was able to eat lunch after all. We spent the rest of the time preparing for Inauguration since Andrews was going to be supplying all the medical supplies. CPT C kept coming up with more things that needed to be packed so we were there kind of late, autoclaving things and counting, etc.
I really hate how short-staffed our clinic is, and the fact that I have no time to work on my career because I have to do the work of 3 damn people.
