A Very Serious Question

Jul 17, 2009 23:54

I've been working at a day camp -chasing five-year-old girls around and making sure they're happy- for the past month and have been surprised at how fascinating the five-year-olds find me. I suppose that I'm older and an authority figure, but still fun and not quite an adult yet, so they must learn everything they can about me. I've been asked what ( Read more... )

Dark gray for me.

I agree about Sasha Baron Cohen. I haven't seen Bruno yet, but I thought some parts of Borat were hilarious.

Interesting choice. Dark grey isn't a colour that would come to mind for me, but now that you mention it, I think I see the appeal. It's calming.

Oh man, finally I hear camp updates! And can you believe that you saw Bruno before me? SAD... Haha... I'm glad you liked it, though :)

I love Sacha Baron Cohen.

Favorite color... BLUE!

Glad you're liking the camp updates. :)
I'm kind of regretting not getting into camp work before now.

I know you love Sacha Baron Cohen. I know. :)

And blue... good choice, my friend.

Ooh, purple is my favourite colour, too! Could be why I'm going to a school where the colours are purple and silver.

Favourite colours, when you're five, can be the difference between being best friends with somebody and not liking them. Oh, how I long for the days when the worst I had to argue about was whether red or blue was a better colour.

Day camps are fun. I've worked a couple. I worked an overnight camp my senior year, and it's always amazing how fifth-graders think that twelfth-graders are grown-ups. It's crazy to look back and think that I was the same way when I went to fifth-grade camp.

Dunno how I feel about Bruno. I haven't seen it yet, and on the one hand, I hate Sacha Baron Cohen and found Borat to be distasteful, insulting, and offensive. But...Bruno looks oddly entertaining. Still don't know if I want to see it.

Yay! We should definitely be best friends now.

I miss being five too. I'd love to be perfectly happy to run around a field for half an hour. That would be great.

Camp work can be kind of mind blowing that way. To think that you're the kind of person you looked up to when you were five or ten... it really is kind of crazy.

I hadn't thought of this before, but I can see how you would find Sacha Baron Cohen's work insulting. He does tend to play off the "Southern Americans are stupid and close minded" stereotype quite a bit, which would be irksome -to say the least- if you are an intelligent, open minded Southern American person.

In spite of this, I think Bruno made some interesting points and it was entertaining. You could wait until it comes out on DVD if you're unsure about whether you should see it.

Wait... was that what insulted you?
I might have been completely off the mark there.

A little bit, yeah, but I just find his humour distasteful in general. I'm not a big fan of people getting laughs for being obscene and overt--it's why I don't much care for Jim Carrey, either. Really, the Southern stereotype is played up by so many people (and so true in many cases) that I can't afford to let that offend me so much. XD Mostly, with Cohen, it's just that he does it so damn much that it gets trite and old, fast. He's found a formula that works for him and his fans. *shrug* Can't fault him for that.

Okay. For the record. i still ask people (who i care about) what their favourite colour is. I think it's super important to know. Usually if you want to prove that you're good friends with someone you have to at least know what their favourite colour is. What if you wanted to make a drawing for them and had to choose a colour? or buy a gift? Or was wondering which iPod nano they're most likely to have?

Mine is blue. As almost everything I own is blue (if it comes in that colour)

That's awesome! I'm glad some people remember that people's favourite colours are important things to know. :)

And I remember that well. Glad to hear it hasn't changed.
