Welsh Marches holiday

ridley_walker and I have just got back from a week's holiday in Llangollen, and, no, we didn't get wet every day, despite what people say about holidays in Wales. We even got some nice evenings :-)

This is Penmaenmawr, on the coast beyond Snowdonia.

As simonsatori has already done the holiday entry by theme, I thought I'd do by the ages of the places we visited, rather than just the usual day by day account, so . .

The oldest 'man made' place we saw was the Bronze Age copper mine on Great Orme. We'd arrived too late in the day to do the underground tour, but some of the workings are visible on the surface.

Considering they're from 600BC and dug out by sheer human slog, with hand tools, they're pretty impressive.

Fast forward to the first century AD, and you have Wroxeter, near Shrewsbury. Once a thriving Roman city, now the remains of the city's public baths, and adjacent market.

The city even had a small open air swimming pool which is more usual for Roman cities further south, but this apparently fell into disuse quickly; evidently there aren't too many takers for lido swimming in the Uk (except morbidfrog :-) ).
