[zombies?]

Oct 26, 2009 20:36

Oh good lord, I'm such a nerd.  Right, this isn't a newsflash.  Here's the proof of the day:

We have a paper due in Limnology on Wednesday on the anatomy and physiology of the major groups of algae.  When I sat down to start my research on blue-green and green algae, I paused for a second.  Then I thought.  Algae.  OMG algae planet!  Battlestar Galactica so owns my soul.

I also have another Only At Northland moment of the semester to share:

There is a game spreading around campus.  Specifically, a zombie game, of all things.  I don't know too many of the specifics because I'm not involved in it, but I do know that this game has been named H1Z1 (yes, that's right).  Of the 87 campus students currently playing, some are zombies, and if you're a zombie you have to wear an orange bandana around your arm.  Non-zombies are walking around campus with nerf guns to shoot down the zombies, and zombies are dead when either (1) they are shot by a nerf gun or (2) they don't "feed" on a human for 48 hours.

Jesus Christ.  Yes, you did hear me correctly.  And yes, this IS going on IN classes sometimes *sigh*  It's completely ridiculous, but it's also hilarious to watch from the sidelines.  Seriously, Only At Northland.

In other news, my upper jaw has been hurting most of the day.  I wish I knew why?

Wrote a short drabble for the current challenge at twelvecolonies .  My first BSG fic!  Also am currently working on three themes for 30_kisses .  Three because I started two that I like, but just can't seem to finish at the moment.  The third is sillier than the other two, so hopefully I'll be able to finish it and post it before the end of the week.  I should start my next round of bsg_20in20 this weekend.

I've been listening to "Roslin and Adama" on repeat for most of the day.

Last week, my Intermediate GIS prof handed out evaluations for us to fill out.  It's not the first time she's taught this course, but she is teaching differently this time and is using a different text, so she wanted our feedback.  Personally, I'm enjoying this class immensely - we work through multiple projects in varying modules to learn skills in a real-life context, and that helps a hell of a lot more than listening to lectures.  Lecturing is necessary in the introductory course, but I like this a lot better.  And sure, there's a constant work load, but you expect that in GIS, and considering we have about a week on average to complete a project, it's definitely manageable.

Now, everyone in this course is either a junior or a senior.  And judging from the discussion in class today, there were quite a few people bitching in the evals about the workload.  Seriously now, what frakkery is that?  So you have to spend a few hours for each assignment in the lab outside of class.  NEWSFLASH: we're in COLLEGE.  She hasn't given us any quizzes or exams; the entirety of our grade is based on these projects.  Of course we are going to spend a lot of time on them!  So stop your bitching and remember what year you are.  I fucking hate people who spend just as much time bitching about the workload as they do getting it done, especially when it's not that bad.

I also feel really bad for Cyndi; she's constantly ragged on but if you get to know her, she's a total sweetheart and one of the most helpful professors I know.  She just has high expectations for us.  That's not a bad thing.  The real world has high expectations, too.

bsg, duathkaimelar is a huge geek
