I'll need a distraction

Nov 01, 2012 14:27

This will be very short since I am currently swamped by RL and because I'm still working on that Darcy appreciation post.

1) The latest LJ "upgrade" involves a system-wide friends page with infinite scroll. Since LJ has a long history of not listening to its users and I think infinite scroll is one of the worst system features ever invented, I'm going to start crossposting from DW. I won't stop posting or commenting, but I don't want to give LJ any more money. :p My DW is here; I'll be porting over my LJ as soon as I have a spare minute.

2) Happier fandom things: fandomaid has launched a campaign to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Sandy, details here! And an Elementary ficathon!

3) Movie/TV news: Awesome news about the SHIELD TV show. ajsdkfjakdf Ming Na on my TV again, can't wait! There's also a new Hansel and Gretel trailer, which continues to look campy and ridiculous and very, very bad. Bring it, RENNER. :)

But the biggest news for my geeky little heart is that Disney has bought Lucasfilm. O_O Disney has mentioned plans for an Episode VII; since Lucas will (allegedly) not be directing or writing I'm hopeful that we'll get a film that isn't filled with inane dialogue and really weird segues. I'm intrigued and apprehensive. Eps I through III, despite their weaknesses, didn't kill my love of the SW universe, although the mediocre prequel books and the horrid Legacy of the Force series came pretty close. I'm almost hoping that the new films jump generations into the future, because as much as I want to see the Solo twins and Anakin and Mara Jade on my screen, if Disney messes it up, I don't think I can stop myself from nerd raging and taking all my toys and going home. XD My Star Wars love is deep-seated and FIERCE. Please feel free to come and talk to me about Rogue Squadron and Aayla Secura and Jag Fel, darlings. ♥

4) Things I have watched: the first season of Justified and two of the three Globe productions that are showing in the theaters. I am so in love with Justified! Will probably buy S2 fairly soon because I need to know what happens next RIGHT NOW. The two Globe plays were All's well and Much ado, and they were amazing. As an extra bonus, I'd never read/seen All's well so it was like reading a brand new book, one of my very favorite things. :)) The only weird thing is that the theater was almost empty during both showings. I was pretty surprised that this wasn't better advertised. If I hadn't been on tumblr, I wouldn't have known about it either. Why would you put in all this effort and then...not market it??

Recs:
a) I think you need a shotgun blast by postcardmystery (Elementary AU, Joan/Sherlock) - She is not the Slayer and he is not the Slayer’s Watcher, but their roles are almost as old as human civilisation and they fall into them without even truly having to try. She kills twenty or thirty vamps a night, and he stands at her shoulder, twisting cheesewire between his fingers that he’s cursed with a spell five centuries old, a stake in his belt and blood between his teeth. omgosh postcard fic \o/ This is so melancholy and sharp and ugh, I LOVE IT.
b) vomit, maybe by bysine (RPF, Ellen Page/Jesse Eisenberg) - AU in which Ellen Page steals hearts because she hasn't got one of her own. Everybody always likes to confuse Jesse and Michael Cera but they're actually nothing alike. Michael's a sweet guy who tries his best to be nice and mostly succeeds. Jesse, on the other hand, is a cheap fuck. I don't usually read RPF (except TSN RPF AUs because those are so fluffy and adorable no one can resist), but this premise really intrigued me, and I'm so glad I gave it a try. This story is charmingly off kilter, fabulously entertaining, and absolutely hilarious. I adored every word.
c) 99 problems (and the dice ain't one) by kellifer_fic (Avengers, Steve/Tony) - Tony's life is almost perfect. He lives in a converted warehouse full of friends (and one frenemy), has a job that leaves him plenty of time to think about other things and a regular Friday night campaign. If his best friend, Steve Rogers, hadn't moved away to New York and left him behind, then perfection would've been achieved. Where everyone is an adorable nerd and Steve and Tony are ridiculous boys in love. Just all around fun and sweet.
d) A brief introduction to Asgardian dinner parties (Avengers, gen) - This is the first Earth-Asgard bonding opportunity since that time Loki punched interstellar relations in the face, twice, and the king and queen of Asgard are here, and they are her boyfriend’s parents. Jane is absolutely not going to get drunk at this party, is the point. This is light hearted and hilarious, with an awesome Jane voice. It made me laugh so much!
e) The woman in the crosshairs by frea_o (Avengers, Clint/Natasha) - In which Clint has a new hobby and Natasha isn't curious, until she is. Black Widow and Hawkeye, their partnership-and what it means-throughout the years. Lovely.
f) make one dream come true (you only live twice) by beardsley (Avengers, Bucky/Steve, NC17) - Five times the Winter Soldier evaded capture. In which there are tuxedoes, vodka martinis (shaken, not stirred), fakeout makeouts, massive property damage, a shark pit, and Steve has an Ursula Andress moment. But mostly, in true James Bond fashion, villains are seduced to the side of good. SO GOOD. Everything I have ever wanted in a Bucky/Steve fic. ♥
g) everyone has a price by sinope (Avengers, Clint/Coulson) - Clint's an amoral assassin. Phil's an effective recruiter. Everyone's a little darker, but they're still bound by rules. This is a bit darker than most movie verse fics, with characters that are more ruthless. I loved the dialogue, it was so smooth and well written.
h) Mr. Coulson's technicolor dreamhouse by not_you (Avengers, Clint/Coulson) - Phil is Mr. Coulson, beloved children's entertainer and purveyor of quality television for humans. Clint is the new cameraman, and this is the tale of their love. There are some odd scene transitions, possibly because this was written in installments for LJ, but this fic is utterly delightful and contains some of the best lines I've ever read.

jeremy renner's face, don't underestimate the power of lucas' , fandom coming together, tv is addicting, fic recs, raylan givens and his ridiculously charm, i am a dork
