The moment Rodney first caught sight of him standing there in that cell, demanding where they’d been, he didn’t want to believe it. He’d said his goodbyes. He’d done his grieving. He’d tried to move on, even if he had ended up making a huge, complicated mess out of that. This had to be some sick, horrible, twisted joke. Yet another in a long line that had been played on him over the last year and a half by God...the galaxy...the universe...whoever the hell was in charge of things.

As they ushered Carson - if that truly was him - back to Atlantis, he saw him looking his way, that expression on his face, that one he knew so well. But he couldn’t make himself go over to him. Not if this wasn’t real. He couldn’t go through all that again.

And even when Keller told him, Ronon and Sheppard about her findings, there was still a part of him that didn’t know what to do. So finally, after everyone headed out of infirmary, he went down to the isolation room, standing by the doorway, his hands shoved deep in his jacket pockets as they stared at each other in silence.

“Rodney,” Carson finally said.

“When was the first time we met?”

The question seemed to startle him, but he quickly answered, “At the Ancient outpost in Antartica. You seemed a wee bit miffed that I had discovered the gene that activated the technology and you didn’t have it.”

Rodney swallowed, recalling how he had treated Carson then. Only he hadn’t known it had been part out of jealousy and part out of...self-protection. He stepped forward a couple of feet. “And when did we first go fishing together?”

“Right before we came to Atlantis. I made you go so you’d actually take a break and not work yourself to death before you had a chance to see this place.”

Rodney’s heart began slamming in his chest. Oh, God. “And the...the first time we kissed?” he whispered.

Carson actually looked amused by that question, a smile tugging at his lips. “When you had Laura Cadman inside your head, and she took over your body to grab me and snog me.” He paused for a moment. “You told me later that you wished you had had the guts to do it yourself.”

Crossing the room, Rodney now stood a mere foot away from him. His hands were starting to shake, so he kept them in his pockets where the other man couldn’t see them. “And the first time we-.”

“In your quarters, after Colonel Sheppard and Doctor Zelenka rescued you from the bottom of the ocean.”

That was it. The next thing Rodney knew, Carson was in his arms as they kissed. They had kept their relationship quiet - right up until Carson’s death...supposed death...whatever it was that had happened - but now, Rodney didn’t care. He was back. However it had happened, he was back. They were together again. And Rodney felt like things would actually be okay for the first time in a good long while as they talked about what happened - even if Carson was horrified that his mother thought he was dead.

Or so he thought until Carson started to get sick, and Keller discovered that he was suffering from cellular degeneration.

He was a clone, she said.

Rodney didn’t want to believe it. He couldn’t believe it. He was Carson. His Carson. Somehow, he knew. There was something more to this. Why make a clone and let the original go? Michael had done something to him, and Rodney swore that he was going to figure out what it was.

But as the long line of those horrible, twisted jokes continued, Carson’s condition worsened quickly, meaning there wasn’t time to find out exactly what was going on. He was going to die. Again. And Rodney felt as though he was being torn apart inside. Again. So when Keller suggested that Carson be put in a stasis pod to give them more time, Rodney begged him to do it, not wanting to lose him. Again.

After some convincing, Carson finally agreed, realizing that this was better than the alternative. At least this gave him a chance.

As Keller and her team got things ready for him to go into stasis, they hid away for a bit, Rodney holding him close as they stared out over the ocean.

“I’m me, Rodney,” he whispered. “No matter what they say.”

“I know,” Rodney said. “From the first moment I saw you again.”

“No, you didn’t, love.”

“All right, maybe not, but still...” Rodney looked down at him. “We’ll help you. I promise, we’ll figure out what’s going on with you and find a way to cure it.”

“I know.”

After one more kiss, they went to the infirmary where Carson was prepped for stasis. This time, though, Rodney didn’t feel as lost as he did after the explosion. Because he knew there was still hope for helping him.

And he was going to find a way to do it so he could have him back again.
