It had been a rough couple of weeks for Susan. The end of the year always was. Now, added to the burden of deciding where to stay this summer was the overwhelming dread that seemed to be covering everything she did because it was always for the last time. Even this prank, as magnificent as it was, would be the last prank she would ever do while here at Hogwarts. It made her feel nostalgic and not a little depressed.

“Do you have gloves?” she asked Justin over her shoulder.

“Waiting for us in Greenhouse One,” he replied tersely, more irritated than she’d ever seen him. “All of our gear is stashed there.”

“Gear? You sound like you’re going out spelunking. This is just a prank.”

Spots of color still burned on Ernie’s cheeks. He seemed to take her presence as an affront to all mankind. “It’s not just a prank. It’s the prank. The prank that will set us on the map at this school. For years to come, people will tell this tale around the Common Room fire.”

“What tale?” The diminutive Hufflepuff stepped from the shadows of the stairs, her glasses catching the light from their wands and reflecting it back to them. Only when she removed them to clean them on her shirt did they see her large brown eyes, sparkling with humor and suspicion. “Where are you going?”

“Rose, you have-“

“Go aw-“

“Shut up, both of you,” Susan asserted, putting out her hand as if the mere presence of the palm could actually shut either boy up. Somehow, it did the trick and they stared at her, barely even breathing. “Rose, what are you doing here? You should be in the Common Room.”

“Kevin’s never been to the library. He prefers to study in his room or outside. The boy has never checked a book out the entire time he’s been here. Also, he’s been hanging out with those two quite a bit lately. Kevin’s never made any friends with the older boys although he’s wanted to ever since he came here. He has aspirations of being a Bash Brother someday. It all seemed very suspicious.”

Susan glowered at Justin. “See, I told you there was no way you were being as secretive as you thought you were.”

“I’m the only one who noticed,” Rose said cheerfully, putting her glasses back into place. “I notice things like that.”

“Good girl,” Susan murmured, stepping forward to pat the girl on the shoulder. She’d always said that Rose was the most intelligent of the younger classes. It would be nice to be able to bestow all her knowledge to someone so that she wasn’t forgotten when she left. It would be like what Cedric had been doing with Zacharias before he was so brutally murdered. She would leave a legacy. “You can come with us.”

Ernie was positively bristling. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“You have your successor. I have mine. Let’s get going.”
