Ernie glanced at Justin, waiting for the subtle signal. He was ready to move as soon as he heard Kevin ask Professor Sprout to help him find a particular nasty book from the library. They’d made sure it was in the dankest corner and very resistant to being uprooted from its location. It would give them enough time to get out of the castle and down to the greenhouses.

They hadn’t counted on Susan’s naturally meddlesome nature. “What are you up to?” she asked, eyes narrowed and hands on hip.

“Why would you think we’re up to anything?”

Ernie knew to keep quiet, especially around Susan. No matter that he now towered over her, she still had a way of getting what she wanted from him. His only weapon was being invisible.

Susan rolled her eyes. “Because your partner,” she made it sound like a dirty word, “looks like he’s wearing a pair of trousers that’s one size too small. Either you need to help him out and get him a pair that fit or you can tell me why you’ve corrupted a perfectly innocent youngster with your rebellious ways.”

“We’re not rebellious,” Ernie stated before realizing his mistake and clapping his hand over his mouth. He was in trouble now.

“Rebellious, yes. Bad liars, yes. Getting out of this without telling me what’s going on, no. Spill.”

Five minutes later, Susan led the way down the staircase, a grin spread across her lips. Once again, she’d beaten the Bash Brothers at their own game. It was a good plan. The best she’d heard yet. She wanted to be a part of this because the story would be spread around the school by dinnertime tomorrow.
