Padma was convinced she was dying. At least, it felt something like dying. Or what she assumed dying must be like. She’d never actually died so she wasn’t sure what it felt like but this must be close. She couldn’t catch her breath and was sure that the blood had stopped pumping through her veins. Yes, this was death. Or love. Both felt about the same.

Tall. Handsome. Knowledgeable. The man was everything she’d ever wanted. He also had another trait that the men around her seemed to possess - he didn’t seem to know she was alive.

“Padma? Padma!”

She shook her head and turned her attention back to Michael. “Sorry. You were saying something?”

The Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor laughed, his white teeth a startling compliment to his dark skin. “I think this verbose young man was trying to get out of showing me around the rest of the castle. There does seem to be quite a bit to see. After almost seven years here, I’m sure you’ve found your fair share of interesting rooms.”

For a brief moment, Padma felt herself blush. The only room she could think about was the one her sister had often told her about in whispered confidences. She’d always wanted to visit but had never been invited. It seemed proper for one to be invited there and not the other way around. If she was a different sort of girl, she might offer an invitation to this new Professor, rules or no rules.

“Padma,” Michael hissed, “get your head out of the clouds. You’re starting to embarrass me. Professor Rammesh will get the idea that Ravenclaws are a bit slow if you’re any indication. I told him you were the best of the lot.”

Expectation made her back stiffen. She didn’t have time for daydreams. Besides, she was in this man’s class. She had plenty of time for gawking later. “My apologies. Please, come this way.”
