I'm studious... I want to know

Do you, dear flist, use your icons for anything more than a pretty on the side of your post? Do you communicate with them as well ( Read more... )

I usually use icons for topic or for emotion/reaction. So I try to have an icon for every couple/character I'm really into so I can use those when discussing something...but then I also have the reactionary ones with text that I'll use when the need arises :P

Do you have icons on your list that you seldom use because they are TOO reactionary? I have a couple that I never use because they might be too insulting when I use them in just casual conversation. I find them funny but always worry about how people will take them.

Like this one. I don't think I've used it yet. *grins*

I do, yeah. Usually my pissed ones I reserve for ranting on my blog...and I have an emotional one that I like but never have much cause for :( I also have this Alpha one which I hesitate to use because it's telling someone they're gonna die :P

The ones I get the most use out of are ship/character related.

That one's not so bad but I can see your point.

You never know who "reads" icons and how they might take them.

Maybe I need to rant more! Hmmm... I'll tell everyone it was your idea!

Hmm...I try to make my icon at least somewhat relevant to whatever I'm posting/commenting about. There are times when that isn't possible and then I usually go with my default.

I have some icons that express emotion but mostly, I just go for icons of my favorite characters/ships. I really thought I'd get more use out of this one ^^.

It's a shame you weren't able to get more mileage out of it!

So you aren't necessarily telling how you feel... just what you love?

It's weird because whenever I go to use it when talking about something I dislike, I get distracted by how adorkable it is and I wonder if it's sending the right message :)

Yeah, basically. I mean, if I can find an icon of a character/ship I love that also happens to say something ^^, that's the best :D

I try to use my icons as intentionally as possible. If I was posting in a community for LOST--I'd use the icon for emotion or OTP shout outs. If it's my own journal--I try to tie it in on 'topical mood'...

If nothing applies, I use my standard default being this one. And it ALWAYS feels like stamping my signature on something.

I had to cut back on the number, so I'm short on options.

I like having a default to fall back on. I make sure that it's something funny or pretty and just overall safe to use in any situation.

When I cut back on numbers, I did a lot of rearranging so that I was only storing the icons that I got the most out of!

Pretty much any time I'm not using my default icon, I am using my icon to convey something...although sometimes it's complex enough that even my own mind doesn't fill me in.

Sometimes my icon use is like a conversation where I've gone two or three steps "ahead" without alerting anyone and so it's not always understandable as part of the conversation but it totally makes sense in my head!

I sure do! I mean I am an icon addict, so have LOTS of them. regardless, I try to use a relevant one each time, or as much as I can. Sometimes it's a reaction/emotion icon, or a fandom icon that is relevant.

My icon choice is therefore generally premeditated enough that I got into the habit of giving them names that I can re-use if I ever feel the need for change (we all know new icons are very very shiny, it's hard to resist). this way, if I change the icon but the new one has the same name, the post or comment I left will still have a relevant icon (aka I'd change "SGA - John pretty" by another icon that would be John being pretty)

other icons don't mean anything and I just like them. but they have their use too.

I've thought about giving them names that stay the same and I think I used to in my early days with LJ but that hasn't happened in quite awhile! It makes it much nicer to go back in your journal, though!

Here is one that I just like, too. It's funny so it makes me smile when I use it.
