30 Days of Writing - Day 4

4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!

The very first character I ever created was a girl named Rain in story called Books that Kill. She was working as a librarian in a small town - I envisioned the library in the town that I lived in when I was learning to read. That place was magical! Anyway, she was the youngest child of the family with two much older siblings. Her parents had died and she thought she was just a normal librarian. Turns out that she wasn't and she was wisked away to a faerie land. At the same time, Clint, the guy who she was dating in high school, was also wished to the same place. Their finding each other made for some cool angst. Not that I knew how to write angst at that time.

This was my first foray into Science Fiction/Fantasy and my first attempt at a long, long story. I'd heard about National Novel Writing Month six days into November and had to play some catch up. I wanted to write a character that I understood but also a universe in which anything could happen. Because I was searching for anything and everything to write about, I took a lot of "dares" from the NaNo site that included things like... have your characters talk about a recipe. It just so happened that two of the characters (and an annoying talking owl) were stranded on an island and they were running out of things to talk about. For nearly 3000 words, they talked about how to make a chocolate cake. Deeply interesting stuff!

Needless to say, I doubt I'm going to continue that story to an end anytime soon. I've moved past stories about exclusively faeries. It was just a phase I went through, thanks to Holly Black's books. I prefer more of the paranormal now. But if a faerie jumps into my storyline now and then, I can't be held accountable! My muse is a faerie (yes, I have a picture of her) and I still hold a fondness for animals that talk and small things that fly.

And I will always love the name Rain.
