❦ In depth:
Personality: Ray's name couldn't better represent the kind of person that he is; he is a ray of light in every sense. He's friendly, talkative, optimistic, outgoing, cheerful, musical, and always looks on the bright side. Caring, kind, protective and sympathetic, he always looks out for others before himself, and hates seeing them unhappy. He's also a romantic and a bit of an idealist, always encouraging the ideas of true love and following your dreams. Towards girls he is always polite and gentlemanly.
While he may seem like a bit of a simple country bumpkin, he has numerous hidden depths. He's actually very phlegmatic, responsible and competent, and far more mature than he may initially seem. He's practical and mostly level-headed, able to keep others in line when necessary. However, he puts honor before reason, which may often lead to him being reckless in his bravery or chivalry, and likely rush into a fight if you push him in certain ways.
Despite this, he is definitely wary of certain dangers, mostly notable Shadow Voodoo. Being friends with Mama Odie, a user of good voodoo, he knows that it is meant to help people, but is highly aware of its dark side and how dangerous it can be. He knows about the Shadow Man from what Mama Odie has told him, and is highly cautious and distrusting of him, even feeling a bit compelled to defend others from him and ward off his dark spirits.
Ray is also very proud of his family, himself and his Cajun origins. He's a bit old fashioned and as a result is somewhat challenged with modern technology. He realizes this though and is never unwilling to try due to his persistence, even when he still doesn't always quite get it. This similarly applies for learning; he's certainly always interested, even when it's a bit over his head or different from what he's used to.
Expectedly he's much more of a night person, and not just because the magic keeping him human is stronger then. He's most active and awake when the stars are out, and is often far more lazy or sleepy during the daylight.
Canon Background:
http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Ray
AU Background: Born and raised in the Bayou south of New Orleans, Ray the firefly lived with his large extended family; mother, father, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A few years ago he fell madly in love with a shy and beautiful girl named Evangeline from a neighboring firefly family. Despite her quietness in contrast to Ray's constant motormouth, she loved him just as dearly back. They were the happiest couple in the swamp, until...
One evening, as Ray and Evangeline sat together atop a dandelion, a large frog suddenly shot its tongue and tried to eat the unsuspecting Evangeline. Ray tried his hardest to save her, and managed to ward the frog off, but by then it was too late. Evangeline had been hurt, fallen into the water, and drowned.
Ray took her body back to their families, having never felt more miserable and guilty he couldn't save his true love, though he understood such is the way of life. All the fireflies placed her body onto a leaf, and sent her floating away down the misty water...
But suddenly Ray looked up into the night sky. Soon the others noticed and looked up as well...
They all began to cheer as they noticed the Evening Star was shining brighter than ever.
Ray, still eternally in love with his dearest Evangeline, believes she's there watching over him always, and doesn't treat her as if she's even gone. To him, Evangeline is there, up in the sky, and he sees her almost every night, glowing beautifully, as one with the Evening Star... whether or not he may be right.
Recently, Ray stumbled upon an envelope addressed to him; a letter of invitation to Disney Academy. Unsure quite what to do about it, his family advised him to go see Mama Odie, the voodoo queen of the Bayou and friend of the firefly families. After reading the letter, Mama Odie was able to see what Ray needed... he needed to go the Academy, but not as a firefly, for his own safety.
With the use of her voodoo and a special enchanted lantern which she had kept for many years, Mama Odie was able to help Ray become human... mostly. The transformation wasn't quite perfect, however, instead of ears he still has antennas, but other then that he was able to gain the appearance of a red-haired Creole young man. Interestingly, Ray isn't sure whether or not Mama Odie was able to do this on her own, or if Evangeline helped...
However, there are numerous conditions to his human form which also gives him some magical ability. Ray's magic isn't as strong during the day when Evangeline is less visible. If Evangeline is blocked out (by, say, The Mist) for an extended period of time, if his lantern breaks or if he's separated from his lantern for too long, Ray will turn back into a firefly (
no_fiyacracka ). Ray's lantern appears to be the source of his magic and he carries it everywhere with him while in human form, and its light even reflects his mood much like his light did when he was a firefly. It will glow brighter when he's happy or excited, turn red when he's angry, and dim when he's sad or scared.

How long have they been at the school(remember this school is from kindergarten on): Just got here~
Relationships with other characters:
t1ghtly_w0und Cogsworth - Acquaintance/Respects: Cogsworth is Ray's English teacher and though he hasn't technically had any classes with him yet, they've still met and Ray respects him as an authority figure and is polite to him.
tiatiatiatiatia Charlotte LaBouff - Acquaintance/Respects/Admirers: A fellow resident of New Orleans, but on the completely other end of the social class. Though they haven't spoken terribly much yet, Ray's extremely grateful one of the richest city girls from back home has been so nice to a poor country guy like him. He has nothing but the utmost respect and politesse for her.
newyorkbynight Elisa Maza - Respects/Considers Friend: A staff member who, though found Ray breaking curfew, actually listened to him, understood his position, and even helped him to see Evangeline for a little while. As a result he very much respects her and thinks of her as a friend. He's very glad there's staff members like her around.
imnot_laughing Roxas - Acquaintance: Spoke to him briefly but doesn't really know him very well yet. Ray does feel very sympathetic towards him though, since he does know Roxas had a terribly traumatizing-sounding encounter with the Mist.
very_practical Jane Calvin - Friend/Like Little Sister: A very caring young girl who Ray treats kindly like she was his younger sister. He's very helpful and friendly to her, relating to her persistent concern for her own younger brother Danny, as Ray grew up with many younger siblings who he was always relentlessly protective of as well. He always looks out for her best interest and tries to guide her in the right direction.
realizethewish Kairi - Acquaintance: A kind girl who also tried to help him when he couldn't get out to see Evangeline. Ray and her seemed to get along quite well and may possibly become friends in the future.
exsuperman Mark Trent - Acquaintance/Respects: Ray's music teacher he briefly met while helping him to fix and clean Roxanne's destroyed photo room. They seemed to get a long quite well, Mark was quite friendly to him and Ray definitely likes him already and can't wait to take his music classes.
outcastinparis Esmerelda - Acquaintance/Highly Respects/Owes Gratitude: Esme helped save Ray's life from his first true encounter with the Black Mist, and for that he's eternally grateful and feels he more than owes her. Unfortunately though he doesn't know a whole lot about her, other than she was brave and caring enough to save him. He would like to get her know her better so he can properly pay her back for her good deed.
str8up_sinister Drake Stone - Respects: Ray's History of Magic teacher. He's extremely fascinated by magic and is immediately impressed by anyone skilled in it, especially enough to teach it. Ray's very excited to take his class... plus, Drake seems like a nice enough kind of guy, right?
bffsonotherside Dr. Facilier - Worst Enemy: Ray hates him hates him hates him and did I mention he hates him. Not only does Ray dislike misusers of voodoo, especially shadow voodoo users at that, Facilier is THE Shadow Man that his mentor Mama Odie warned him about. He isn't fooled by his clever tricks and charisma, Ray feels, and knows, to the bone that Facilier is 100% bad news. However, this doesn't mean he isn't scared of him. He avoids Facilier at all costs, and does whatever he can to protect others from his dangerous spells.
