Name: Raymond (but call him Ray)
Movie/series: The Princess and the Frog
Year/Position: First Year College Student
Non-Speaking Animal Companion(if any): N/A (he sort of used to be one though, haha~)
Powers(if any): Staying in humanyish form, can illuminate things, can make bunches of sparkly lights like he could when he was a firefly, can ward of dark shadows/evil spirits, flight (though this is difficult and takes quite a lot of energy). Also does speaking French count?
Canon history:
http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Ray
AU history: Born and raised in the Bayou south of New Orleans, Ray the firefly lived with his large extended family; mother, father, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A few years ago he fell madly in love with a shy and beautiful girl named Evangeline from a neighboring firefly family. Despite her quietness in contrast to Ray's constant motormouth, she loved him just as dearly back. They were the happiest couple in the swamp, until...
One evening, as Ray and Evangeline sat together atop a dandelion, a large frog suddenly shot its tongue and tried to eat the unsuspecting Evangeline. Ray tried his hardest to save her, and managed to ward the frog off, but by then it was too late. Evangeline had been hurt, fallen into the water, and drowned.
Ray took her body back to their families, having never felt more miserable and guilty he couldn't save his true love, though he understood such is the way of life. All the fireflies placed her body onto a leaf, and sent her floating away down the misty water...
But suddenly Ray looked up into the night sky. Soon the others noticed and looked up as well...
They all began to cheer as they noticed the Evening Star was shining brighter than ever.
Ray, still eternally in love with his dearest Evangeline, believes she's there watching over him always, and doesn't treat her as if she's even gone. To him, Evangeline is there, up in the sky, and he sees her almost every night, glowing beautifully, as one with the Evening Star... whether or not he may be right.
Recently, Ray stumbled upon an envelope addressed to him; a letter of invitation to Disney Academy. Unsure quite what to do about it, his family advised him to go see Mama Odie, the voodoo queen of the Bayou and friend of the firefly families. After reading the letter, Mama Odie was able to see what Ray needed... he needed to go the Academy, but not as a firefly, for his own safety.
With the use of her voodoo and a special enchanted lantern which she had kept for many years, Mama Odie was able to help Ray become human... mostly. The transformation wasn't quite perfect, however, instead of ears he still has antennas, but other then that he was able to gain the appearance of a red-haired Creole young man. Interestingly, Ray isn't sure whether or not Mama Odie was able to do this on her own, or if Evangeline helped...
However, there are numerous conditions to his human form which also gives him some magical ability. Ray's magic isn't as strong during the day when Evangeline is less visible. If Evangeline is blocked out (by, say, The Mist) for an extended period of time, if his lantern breaks or if he's separated from his lantern for too long, Ray will turn back into a firefly (
no_fiyacracka ). Ray's lantern appears to be the source of his magic and he carries it everywhere with him while in human form, and its light even reflects his mood much like his light did when he was a firefly. It will glow brighter when he's happy or excited, turn red when he's angry, and dim when he's sad or scared.
Personality: Ray's name couldn't better represent the kind of person that he is; he is a ray of light in every sense. He's friendly, talkative, optimistic, outgoing, cheerful, musical, and always looks on the bright side. Caring, kind, protective and sympathetic, he always looks out for others before himself, and hates seeing them unhappy. He's also a romantic and a bit of an idealist, always encouraging the ideas of true love and following your dreams. Towards girls he is always polite and gentlemanly.
While he may seem like a bit of a simple country bumpkin, he has numerous hidden depths. He's actually very phlegmatic, responsible and competent, and far more mature than he may initially seem. He's practical and mostly level-headed, able to keep others in line when necessary. However, he puts honor before reason, which may often lead to him being reckless in his bravery or chivalry, and likely rush into a fight if you push him in certain ways.
Despite this, he is definitely wary of certain dangers, mostly notable Shadow Voodoo. Being friends with Mama Odie, a user of good voodoo, he knows that it is meant to help people, but is highly aware of its dark side and how dangerous it can be. He knows about the Shadow Man from what Mama Odie has told him, and is highly cautious and distrusting of him, even feeling a bit compelled to defend others from him and ward off his dark spirits.
Ray is also very proud of his family, himself and his Cajun origins. He's a bit old fashioned and as a result is somewhat challenged with modern technology. He realizes this though and is never unwilling to try due to his persistence, even when he still doesn't always quite get it. This similarly applies for learning; he's certainly always interested, even when it's a bit over his head or different from what he's used to.
Expectedly he's much more of a night person, and not just because the magic keeping him human is stronger then. He's most active and awake when the stars are out, and is often far more lazy or sleepy during the daylight.
Greatest Fear: Being lost in total darkness without light, the loss of his friends, family and loved ones, Evangeline's star disappearing, the dangers of Shadow Voodoo and evil spirits, turning back into a firefly and being squished, dying and never being truly reunited with Evangeline.
What are your plans with this character?: I'd had ideas for a Human!Ray and how he'd function in an environment like this (this being an environment extremely different from the one in his canon) for quite a while, so one of my plans is finally getting to work with that. I'm especially looking forward to working with him during Mist events, as well as CR with canonmates and noncanonmates alike. But I'd be lying though if I said the number one thing I'm excited for is his interactions with Dr. Facilier, since I know that's going to be incredibly interesting from the moment they first meet. Other then that, I really want him to help spread light and happiness throughout the Academy and it's students and teachers, much like he does for me as one of my personal "peace of mind" characters. :)

This was certainly new and different.
Not just the scenery that past by the window. Not just the tram that was taking him to the Academy. Everything now was nothing quite like what Ray had ever experienced before... the fact he was human now (at least, for the most part) made that even more true.
Tightly holding the staff of his lantern out of excitement, he curiously began to stare out the window at the world passing by...
Green plains, forests, and a clear, blue river, shining in the sunlight; about as different from his swamp and bayou home as you could get. Although it was beautiful in a certainly unique way, Ray suddenly began to feel a bit tired. The moonlight, the stars, and his shining, beloved Evangeline was more of what kept him awake, not the sun... something to be expected. He yawned, and felt himself drifting off despite how much he wanted to keep his eyes open...
"Hey, are you okay?"
He suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder, having either caught his attention or woken him up after actually falling alseep for a moment or two, or both.
Ray turned to the person who'd snapped him back to reality, who happened to be a long-haired, blue-eyed brunette girl in a lacy black dress, holding a folded up matching parasol.
"Yeah, ah'm fine, chere. T'ank ya fo' bringin' me back, dere." he said politely to her, smiling.
The girl smiled back and giggled a little. "No problem. Good luck at the Academy." she replied kindly, as she began to walk back to her seat on the tram.
"Well t'ank ya muchly, darlin'! But ain't ya goin' dere t--"
But before Ray could finish, he blinked and noticed... she was gone.
He blinked again. She still wasn't there. One more time. There was no sign of the girl in the black lace dress. There was no one else on the tram but him.
"Must'a been dreamin' or sumfin'..."

[Tonight, on a beautiful spring evening, a new student steps onto the Academy campus... a very unique looking new student.
He appears to be a Creole young man, dressed in raggy, old patched-up clothes, with messy red hair and a small goatee... and antennas. Yes, antennas, much like an insect's. Also curiously, aside from his small suitcase, he's carrying an old but brightly glowing brass lantern on a wooden staff.
The strange newcomer begins to make his way across the campus, looking intrigued and fascinated by what he sees around him. This would seem to make sense, being as he appears to be just some poor country kid in a new place, but maybe those antennas are another hint to why he seems so out of place.
His lantern begins to glow extra bright as he smiles while curiously looking around the area, and suddenly says something to himself in Creole French with a distinctively Cajun twang...]
