Paintings!

Jun 24, 2009 14:33

So as mentioned previously, I EXPLODED with art this last semester and, to save you all from having to plow through fifty plus images (that and I'm still cleaning up photos of some of them) I'll do it in portions. The first portion being paintings!

Painting was a little bit of a chore, mostly because we painted still lifes and self portraits, my two least favorite subjects in art. The nice thing was that the last assignment was completely open (I ended up doing two small paintings for it). The good thing is that he basically let us paint however we wanted and apart from being still lifes and a self-portrait, the subject matter was pretty open, which made it more tolerable

Assignment number one: Tondo!

A Tondo is, essentially, a painting that is round. In this case we were supposed to paint an aerial view of a stil-life. I employed Spider-Man, who has been the subject of at least one other painting, several models, a cast of the distressed heads I did back in Sculpture I (which I need to post pictures of sometime... especially the chocolate one), and a random rock. Acrylics on 36" wood table top.

This was done in acrylics ... I have reaffirmed my dislike of acrylics and this will probably be the last acrylic painting I ever do ... or at least the last one for a very long time.

Assignment number two: Vanitas

Vanitas is a style that essentially is a morbid still life. They're supposed to comment on the "brevity of life" and note the corruptible nature of material things. I loved painting the two-dollar bills. Not a prime photo of it, but paintings are terribly difficult to get good shots of, especially with their reflectiveness. Oil on 34" square canvas.

Some details:

I actually thought about scrapping it a few times and starting over as I had a hard time getting into the piece, but I think it turned out descently.

Assignment number three: Still Life In Motion

I had a blast doing this one. Of course, I really didn't intend on doing it this way at all. It started with some stablemate breyer models and I started sketching, couldn't get into a good flow and didn't feel like doing detail work and just sketched and sketched and painted over what was there before and did more layers and layers and layers until I realized that this is what the painting was supposed to be. The more solid forms were the last to be done and this painting really needs to be viewed in person, rotated, and enjoyed at all angles. This size hurts the eyes a bit, but such is the nature of the internet. Oil on 34" square canvas.

Assignment number four: Self-Portrait With a Silly Hat

I chose Panda's Dressage bridle as my "silly hat." I tried getting the bit to balance on my pony tail/pseudo-bun, but it didn't work out that way. It's a bit off, and the background is horrendous, but that's okay. As usual, the eyes look really sharp (well, the right one) and are pretty spot-on for color, but the rest is, y'know. It's a self portrait. 20"x34" oil on canvas.

Final assignment: Open

"To Beyond" I'm calling it. Oil on 9"x12" cradled board. I started this one and then got a bit "stuck" on it and did the second one before coming back and finishing this one. Done with minimal reference. Looks a bit better in person, per usual.

Second piece. The more I look at it the less I really like it. I tried duplicating some of the things that were successful in my drawing class in this painting, revisiting the resistance theme, but the spontaneity just isn't there. That's okay, I learned some things with it and have a couple other small panels that I'd like to attack later this year. Oil on 8"x10" board.

Once I get all my drawings cleaned up I'll post some of those. I'll probably split it into the Resistance series and everything else.

And a HUGE thanks to mythos_amante who gave me paint! She deserves a painting ... but I have no idea what of.
