Horse Survey and More Rain

Feb 14, 2008 10:15

Woke up to rain. I think ... no, it's not raining now, but my lesson was rained out, and I assume my training as well. So I get to go to the grocery and feed stores for supplies and then I shall work on some art stuff.

I keep on reminding myself that I need to not complain about the rain because we really, desperately need it because of the drought the last ten-fifteen years.

Horse survey was thieved from silivrenwolf.

1. How old were you when you first started riding?
We have pictures of me on horses when I was still in diapers, but I didn't start really riding solo until I was 10.

2. First horse ridden:
Zel/Hazel, my grandpa's old chestnut Arab gelding (RIP)

3. First horse trotted on:
Probaby Zel.

4. First horse cantered on:
Probably Zel again (a lot of first with him)

5. First Horse fallen off of:
Her name was Rose (maybe Rosie) she was a little Pony of Americas (POA), jumped crooked and I had to let go because there was no way I'd be righting myself.

6. Most recent horse fallen off of:
Panda (shhh....)

7. First horse you trotted over poles with:
James, I think, a bit old TB or Warmblood gelding I took lessons on when I was younger, I loved him!

8. First horse jumped with:
James again, I probably looked a bit funny on the big ol' chestnut, but I liked him.

9. First horse who ran away with you:
Dakota, formerly my Grandpa's, now my mom's mare. It was up in Utah, in winter. I took her down the field, turned around, and, well, she wanted to get back to her baby (Cinnamon was a weanling, but they were still quite attached) and she bolted back. Dad insisted I wear gloves (ski gloves...) and I couldn't feel the reins so I kind of gave up trying to stop her and just held on.

10. First horse that scared the crap out of you:
I've never been truly scared by a horse, though at times Thunder got me quite worried. (He's the one that gave me a concussion...)

11. First horse shown?
Glori, the first and only back in May of '03.

12. First horse to win a class with:
Hahahahaha ... none.

13. Do you/have you taken lessons:
Yes, a smidge of jumping when I was around 13 or somesuch and then dressage and jumping the last two years under Kim.

14. First horse you ever rode bareback:
Zel (kindof), really ridden bareback I'm not sure, either one of Judy's two Arab girls or Kash.

15. First horse trail ridden with:
Zel (are we noticing a trend?

16. Current Barn name:
Swamp Fox Farms (or something like that) is the place my instructor owns.

17. Do you ride English or western?
English, Western, Bareback, depends on the occasion! Trail mostly Western, "serious" riding or training usually English.

18. First Horse to place at a show with:
Glori, it was fourth and fifth out of five horses, hehe.

19. Ever been to horse camp?
No.

20. Ever been to a riding clinic?
Yes, Charley Hill and Clinton Anderson, the former I actually rode in the clinic, the latter I just watched.

21. Ridden sidesaddle?
Not in an actual sidesaddle, but I plan on learning how someday.

22. First horse leased:
Never leased

23.first horse owned:
Kash, my boy!

24. Highest ribbon in a show-
4th

25. Ever been to an 'A' rated show?
Shown, no, attended? Yep!

26. Ever competed in pony games/relay races?
Technically no, but I have played tag with some friends before.

27. Ever fallen off at a show:
No.

28. Do you ride Hunter/Jumpers?
I have

29. Have you ever barrel raced?
No, not really interested.

30. Ever done pole bending?
No again, timed Western events aren't really my thing.

31. Favorite gait:
Depends on the horse. One mare I rode, Charlie had the most awesome trot. Kash has a wonderful canter and Ruby has a walk that is absolutely amazing when you get her "swinging."

32. Ever cantered bareback?
Yes, I actually did it yesterday.

33. Have you ever done dressage?
Yes, but just lower-level.

34. Have you ever evented?
Technically yes and really no. I've been over a couple of cross-country fences, but never through an actual course.

35. Have you ever mucked a stall?
Yep! Got paid too! Now I don't get paid, but I do muck on occasion.

36. Ever been bucked off?
I've never actually been bucked off, but I have been ditched/had to bail, and had the lovely opportunity to have a horse come down WITH me a couple times.

37. Ever been on a horse that reared?
Yes, a couple times, but never in danger of turning over.

38. Horses or ponies?
I never really liked ponies, though our little Halfinger mare is growing on me and I might consider looking for one as my personal "horse" when Kash retires. Of course, considering they can weigh as much as your average horse, I'm not sure if you can conisder them "ponies" in what people usually think of.

39. Do you wear a helmet?
ALL THE TIME, at least since I got a concussion.

40. What's the highest you've jumped:
Possibly 3' officially, but that was the jump ... I think I've actually sat a 5' jump before because the horse was overcompensating, heh.

41. Have you ever ridden at night?
Yes, under lights, though.

42. Do you watch horsey television shows?
I have, but not regularly because I'm not really a TV person and we don't have anything beyond what we can get from an antenna.

43. Have you ever been seriously hurt/injured from a fall?
I think the concussion was the worst injury. I have gotten a few bruises and been pretty sore, but the concussion was the worst.

44. Have you ever ridden without anything (no saddle, bridle, halter etc)?
Yes, on Kash in the arena. He does pretty good in just the walk, but he doesn't listen as well in the trot or canter, I think part of it is I'm not patient enough.

45. Do you ride in an arena or ring?
Is there a difference? Regular arena vs. dressage ring?

46. Have you ever been trampled by a horse?
Yes, by Kash, actually, but I didn't let go of the lead rope and ended up pulling him over the top of me. Mom said it looked like he was trying his best NOT to step on me. Luckily nothing was broken. I did have some nice bruising on my shoulders and back, though!

47. Have you ever been bitten?
More times than I'd care to count.

48. Ever had your foot stepped on by a horse?
Several times, the worst was by Thunder, nearly broke my toe because he jammed down on me with the edge of his foot.

49. Do you clean your tack regularly?
Not really "regularly" but a few times a year.

50. Ever played ride-a-buck?
I haven't played, but I have heard of it, but haven't actually played.

*YOUR HORSE*
51. Show name: Kash Advance

52. Barn Name:
1. Kash
2. My/The Boy

53. Any nicknames?
Twidget or Goober (just on occation)

54. Breed:
1. Arabian

55. Goes english or western:
Both

56. Sex?
Geldings

57. Age:
1. 11 come May.

58. Primary Discipline?
1. Trail or Dressage

59. Show experience:
None that I know of

60. Good on the trail:
Excellent both leading and following, however he can get a little jiggy if he's too far behind. He's willing to investigate anything "scary" and is generally the sacrificial goat when other horses don't want to go forward.

61. Did you train this horse yourself?
Practically, he was VERY green when I got him.

62. Vices:
He can be a bit mouthy, not so bad as he used to be, but he will lick, lip, and occasionally nip (nipping is getting less frequent). He can be a little pushy if you're not confident. The other really isn't a vice, but as soon as he see's the bridle (at least his western one) he's diving for the bit.

63. Spooky?
Not in the "EGADS IT'S GOING TO GET ME!" sense, but he does have a "WHAT'S THAT!" response that starts with a little shake or jump to the side before the curiosity gets the better of him.

64. Is your horse able to be ridden bareback
Yes, though I admit not everyone can ride him well.

65. Does your horse come when you call?
Usually, if he doesn't come he at least looks at or faces me.

66. Is your horse good with children and other horses?:
Kash is very outgoing. I just worry about him nippling someone's fingers off.

67. Is your horse worked regularly:
For the most part Royal is worked out regularly but I need to up it. Whiskey needs to be worked more as well.

68. Ever a lesson horse?
I've used him as one for more advanced students. He can become a bit noodly under a novice who isn't refined with their cues, though.

69. Does your horse like treats?
lol What horse doesn't?! < -- I echo Angela. He really likes watermelon and Dates

70. Do you take lessons on your horse?
Yep, I think it's helped him to calm down and made us better at communicating.

71. Is your horse easy to work around?
For me, yes. He can be a little intimidating for beginners as he can be a bit "in your face," but not in a mean way.

72. Has your horse ever escaped from it's stall?
Yes, thus we now have caribieners on the stalls. Of course, he hasn't done it since he let Dakota out that one time.

74. Is your horse hard to worm?
Nope.

75. Is your horse good for the farrier / vet?
The Farrier's only complaint is that Kash sometimes likes to nibble on his backside when he's bent over working on his front feet *snicker.* Of course, that's not a problem with shorter cross ties. He's great for the vet, though he does need a lot of sedative to get his teeth floated, not because he's bad, but because it just takes a lot to get him sleepy!

76. Have you ever won a class with your horse?
I've never shown with him.

77. Have you ever had a moment where you feel really connected to your horse?
It's been known to happen on occation.

78. Does your horse like hay?
Indeed, but he prefers the Alfalfa hay.

79. Does your horse have special feed or supplement?
No, he gets psyllium once a month with a little bit of oats to keep him (and the other horses) regular.

80. Does your horse often have a very messy stall?
Only when it doesn't get to dry (he poops in one spot, easy to clean, but he also urinates in one spot and with wet or cold days it just doesn't have a chance to dry).

81. Does your horse use any special boots?
I sometimes put splint boots on him.

82. Do you use a whip and spurs?
I only use a Dressage whip sometimes. It doesn't take him much to move forward, just for a more refined cue.

83. Does your horse like to run?
Most definately, at least on trail, not so much in the arena.

84. How many times a week do you ride your horse?
Not often enough, sometimes once a week, ideally 5X, but I won't see that until Summer or even next year.

85. Does your horse have markings?
White star, pasterns on his back legs, and he has a white heel on one of his forelegs (I believe that's a good luck or good omen in Arabs)

86. Do you braid your horse for shows?
I don't show (yet), but I might try a long plait when I start.

87. What color is your horse's halter?
Blue nylon halter, the same one that came with him.

88. Does your horse follow you?
Yes, just about all the time unless Ruby crowds him out because she thinks she deserves the attention more.

89. Can your horse backup?
Very well.

90. Is your horse's trot easier to sit to or post to?
He's good at both. He does have a nice, comfortable trot when he's rounded, but he can also do a faster, ground-covering trot that generally requires posting.

91. Have you ever dressed your horse up for Halloween?
Not yet!

93. Has your horse ever produced offspring?
Not according to the Arabian Horse Association, but he was supposedly a stud until he was five.

94. Do you and your horse have "colors"?
No, unless you count that all of my tack is black, heh.

95. What is your horse's favorite treat?
Dates or Watermellon, I think.

96. Do you normally lunge your horse before riding?
Not normally.

97. Has your horse ever given a pony ride?
He's never given a pony ride, but he has ponied another horse!

98. How many people owned this horse before you?
At least three (including his breeder). Two if you don't count the breeder.

99. Does your horse get dirty easily?
Not really ... unless he rolls in the mud.

*YOUR HORSE*
51. Show name: Connestee CRB

52. Barn Name:
1. Chewy

53. Any nicknames?
1. The Little Mare
2. The Bread Machine/Maker

54. Breed:
Haflinger

55. Goes english or western:
She does well in both.

56. Sex?
Mare

57. Age:
17 next month (that's years!)

58. Primary Discipline?
Lesson Horse! If that counts as a discipline.

59. Show experience:
None that I know of

60. Good on the trail:
We've never taken her "out" because, well, she's the Bread Maker and my business would be toast if anything happened to her.

61. Did you train this horse yourself?
I taught her how to longe, but she was quite well broke despite a six year break (she was a broodmare).

62. Vices:
None.

63. Spooky?
If she spooks it lasts for about a half second and then she's over it, so no.

64. Is your horse able to be ridden bareback
Walk and trot easily, the canter can be a little tricky as she's not very balanced in it.

65. Does your horse come when you call?
No, but she'll at least stand still to be caught.

66. Is your horse good with children and other horses?:
Outstanding with small children, she's very gentle and is amazing with beginning riders. She gets along okay with other horses.

67. Is your horse worked regularly:
Yep, she regularly (when we're not rained out) does five lessons a week (or more).

68. Ever a lesson horse?
*Laughs.* That is her main purpose in life right now.

69. Does your horse like treats?
lol What horse doesn't?! < -- I echo Angela, again

70. Do you take lessons on your horse?
I do not, most of my students do, though!

71. Is your horse easy to work around?
Very easy.

72. Has your horse ever escaped from it's stall?
Never from her stall, but when we first got her she slipped out of her old halter and went on a gay old run about four different properties before finding a pile of hay.

74. Is your horse hard to worm?
Not at all.

75. Is your horse good for the farrier / vet?
Excellent for both. The Farrier's only complaint is that she's a bit short and he has to kneel sometimes *grin.*

76. Have you ever won a class with your horse?
Nope.

77. Have you ever had a moment where you feel really connected to your horse?
I haven't really ridden her enough, though she is a nice horse to ride.

78. Does your horse like hay?
Most definately.

79. Does your horse have special feed or supplement?
Along with psyllium every month she gets hoof pellets, she had an issue with her bars breaking last year before we put shoes on her fronts, we give her the extra biotin to help keep her feet healthy.

80. Does your horse often have a very messy stall?
She didn't used to, but she's taken to urinating on/near her hay, which makes a muddy mess.

81. Does your horse use any special boots?
Nope. Granted, she's of such a weird size it'd be hard to find one's that fit. Her cannons are super short, but they're thicker than most regular horse legs!

82. Do you use a whip and spurs?
She doesn't need either, though I use a whip on the ground to help reinforce my student's cues at times.

83. Does your horse like to run?
To quote Chris "Chewy doesn't canter." (She usually dives towards the middle and tries to do as small a circle as possible because, y'know, small circle means less work.)

84. How many times a week do you ride your horse?
I hardly ever ride her, but my students ride her several times a week!

85. Does your horse have markings?
She has a broad blaze that falls into a white muzzle and lip marks (well, not a completely white muzzle, but about a 1/3 of it is white). I think her right fore has an actual white leg and she has speckled white on her other legs, but you can't tell because she's a really light flaxen chestnut (sorrel) so her legs look white/cream anyway. You have to shave and then wet her legs to see the markings.

86. Do you braid your horse for shows?
She hasn't been shown by me yet, but she'll probably get braided if I do.

87. What color is your horse's halter?
Black and tan rope halter.

88. Does your horse follow you?
Sometimes when my students are riding her, but she's not really magnetically attracted to people.

89. Can your horse backup?
Quite well.

90. Is your horse's trot easier to sit to or post to?
It's pretty easy to sit or post.

91. Have you ever dressed your horse up for Halloween?
Not yet!

93. Has your horse ever produced offspring?
She has had at least five foals (it would have been six, but she aborted the last one due to strangulation). She has a broodmare belly and rather large udders.

94. Do you and your horse have "colors"?
No, unless you count that all of my tack is black, heh.

95. What is your horse's favorite treat?
I'm not sure, she likes carrots and apples, though.

96. Do you normally lunge your horse before riding?
No.

97. Has your horse ever given a pony ride?
Several times.

98. How many people owned this horse before you?
At least three (including her breeder who had her until she was three).

99. Does your horse get dirty easily?
Yes, she likes to roll in the mud and is a dirty little mare.

*Chris's HORSE*
51. Show name: Ruby

52. Barn Name:
1. Ruby

53. Any nicknames?
Ruby-Doo, Ruby-Two, Ruby-Three, Rub (pronounced "ROOB"), "Green Broke Belgian Mare"

54. Breed:
Belgian

55. Goes english or western:
Both

56. Sex?
Mare

57. Age:
Around Eight

58. Primary Discipline?
Trail Riding

59. Show experience:
None that I know of (she was a plough horse for some Amish people!)

60. Good on the trail:
Great on the trail. If she sees people she likes to try and follow them.

61. Did you train this horse yourself?
No, she's Amish trained.

62. Vices:
None, really, when asked to pick up her right hind she lifts it WAY up to begin with before relaxing.

63. Spooky?
Hardly.

64. Is your horse able to be ridden bareback
She's more comfortable bareback than under saddle. I've ridden her around the neighborhood a couple of times.

65. Does your horse come when you call?
She comes when she sees people. Ruby=People magnet.

66. Is your horse good with children and other horses?:
She's excellent with children and people in general. She makes funny noises (not-quite-squeals) when other horses annoy her, she also has a very well-practiced evil-eye. But generally, unless it's meal time she tolerates other horses unless they pester her.

67. Is your horse worked regularly:
She gets worked once or twice a week.

68. Ever a lesson horse?
I use her for lessons fairly regularly now.

69. Does your horse like treats?
She likes them, but she loves attention more.

70. Do you take lessons on your horse?
No, she's Chris's horse, really.

71. Is your horse easy to work around?
Quite easy

72. Has your horse ever escaped from it's stall?
Nope, but she has moved it before (we have port-a-panels).

74. Is your horse hard to worm?
She is the easiest horse to deworm on the planet. I challenge you to find one that is easier.

75. Is your horse good for the farrier / vet?
She and the Farrier have had their issues in the past, but she's much better now. Never been a problem for the vet.

76. Have you ever won a class with your horse?
She's never been shown.

77. Have you ever had a moment where you feel really connected to your horse?
I don't really ride her enough.

78. Does your horse like hay?
What horse doesn't?

79. Does your horse have special feed or supplement?
Along with the Alfalfa and Bermuda we give her some Rice Bran for extra fat and energy, mostly for the fat.

80. Does your horse often have a very messy stall?
No, she has her one spot she goes in and, since we raised her stall, most of it actually rolls out!

81. Does your horse use any special boots?
Good luck finding anything that fits her massive draft legs.

82. Do you use a whip and spurs?
No, except when driving, and even then it hardly ever touches her.

83. Does your horse like to run?
Ruby's favorite thing is to stop.

84. How many times a week do you ride your horse?
I rarely ride her, Chris rides once a week usually.

85. Does your horse have markings?
Big white blaze that runs all the way down her face. She's a darker sorrel, but she looks like she has three high white stockings even though she hardly has any pink skin on her legs.

86. Do you braid your horse for shows?
Never shown.

87. What color is your horse's halter?
Big black nylon halter.

88. Does your horse follow you?
She follows everyone. She chases other horses out of her way if they are between her and human conact.

89. Can your horse backup?
She does, but it can be hard to get her feet "unstuck."

90. Is your horse's trot easier to sit to or post to?
It is very easy to sit.

91. Have you ever dressed your horse up for Halloween?
Not yet!

93. Has your horse ever produced offspring?
We don't know, but judging by the size of her udder she's probably had at least one or two foals, but again, we have no idea.

94. Do you and your horse have "colors"?
No.

95. What is your horse's favorite treat?
Head scratches! ... It's true.

96. Do you normally lunge your horse before riding?
No.

97. Has your horse ever given a pony ride?
Once or twice.

98. How many people owned this horse before you?
We have no idea, at least three, the lady we bought her from, an Amish horse trader, another Amish guy, and who knows who else.

99. Does your horse get dirty easily?
Not too easily, granted her color kind of hides it.

*YOUR HORSE*
51. Show name: Pecos Joanna

52. Barn Name:
Panda

53. Any nicknames?
Worry Wart
Panda Wild Horse
The Cone-Proof Horse

54. Breed:
Pinto Draft, mostly Percheron crossed some generations ago with some pinto horse (who knows if it was another draft or not).

55. Goes english or western:
Both

56. Sex?
Mare

57. Age:
6 in May

58. Primary Discipline?
1. Trail or Dressage

59. Show experience:
None that I know of

60. Good on the trail:
She's pretty good on trail when she's in the lead or in the middle. When she's in the rear she feels like she has to keep up all the time. She also doesn't like "Wild People"

61. Did you train this horse yourself?
She was green when we got her, had a guy ride her (walk and trot) for a couple months until last Summer and then I put some hours on her. I think I'm the only one who has put canter work on her along with bending/lateral work.

62. Vices:
Vice-free.

63. Spooky?
She can be, mostly because she doesn't always know what's expected of her. She's fine with just about everything but people walking around on the ground, though she's doing much better. If she does spook it's just once (per ride) and then she's usually over it. She is cone-proof, though! (You can throw orange traffic cones at/around/over her and she won't budge).

64. Is your horse able to be ridden bareback
Yes, but I don't reccomend it without a pad or for less than experienced riders.

65. Does your horse come when you call?
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Not very people-oriented.

66. Is your horse good with children and other horses?:
She's pretty good with other horses. She's okay with children, but I wouldn't put little kids on her unless they were fairly competent under saddle. Panda does follow a strict rule of not stepping on people, though, so you don't have to worry about her trampeling anyone.

67. Is your horse worked regularly:
Not always.

68. Ever a lesson horse?
I've used her for my more advanced students.

69. Does your horse like treats?
She likes them, but she doesn't know if she's allowed to eat things out of peoples' hands. It's quite funny, actually.

70. Do you take lessons on your horse?
I do, I swap between her and Kash.

71. Is your horse easy to work around?
She's quite easy to work around once she's "caught" and in "Work Mode."

72. Has your horse ever escaped from it's stall?
No.

74. Is your horse hard to worm?
She's pretty easy.

75. Is your horse good for the farrier / vet?
Pretty good for both.

76. Have you ever won a class with your horse?
Never been shown.

77. Have you ever had a moment where you feel really connected to your horse?
Only briefly.

78. Does your horse like hay?
After answering it three times, I think this is just a silly question. Of COURSE she does.

79. Does your horse have special feed or supplement?
Apart from the monthly Psyllium, no.

80. Does your horse often have a very messy stall?
Not very often.

81. Does your horse use any special boots?
Nope.

82. Do you use a whip and spurs?
Sometimes a Dressage Whip, but as with Kash, it's just for more refined cues, to do most things she doesn't need it.

83. Does your horse like to run?
When we first got her she didn't know she was allowed to canter with a person on her. It was quite a humerous sight, actually. She's getting better, but I don't really know if she "likes" it.

84. How many times a week do you ride your horse?
Sometimes once a week, but not nearly as much as she needs to be.

85. Does your horse have markings?
She's a pinto! Her "normal" markings include a star and small snip between her nostrils. She has black around her head, a splotch over her whithers, a black butt, black on her flanks, and a black diamond-ish shape on her chest. Her legs are pretty much all white.

86. Do you braid your horse for shows?
If I show her, I probably will.

87. What color is your horse's halter?
Black rope halter (her lead rope is black-and-white like she is!)

88. Does your horse follow you?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! She's not really a people-horse (...yet?). Of course, in Panda's defence, once she's "caught" she follows where lead (even without a rope).

89. Can your horse backup?
She does okay at it.

90. Is your horse's trot easier to sit to or post to?
Much easier to post. It's hard to get her into a slow steady trot for sitting.

91. Have you ever dressed your horse up for Halloween?
Not yet!

93. Has your horse ever produced offspring?
I don't think so.

94. Do you and your horse have "colors"?
No, unless you count that all of my tack is black, heh. She does look good in blue, though!

95. What is your horse's favorite treat?
I'm not sure. She likes the standard apples and carrots.

96. Do you normally lunge your horse before riding?
Sometimes, but she needs to get better longeing

97. Has your horse ever given a pony ride?
Once ... Kindof.

98. How many people owned this horse before you?
One, we bought her from the people that bred and started her under saddle

99. Does your horse get dirty easily?
YES. Oftentimes Panda is Brown-and-Cream instead of Black-and-White

100. What's your favorite horsey memory?
I could easily tell you one of my worst, but it's hard to mark one of my favorites. One that I can think of at the moment is after I had ridden Kash out in Judy's field I climbed off and sat under the tree. Kash dropped his head into my lap and he just stood there while I stroked his head and just got to be with him.
