Review: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Jan 29, 2023 10:05

I picked up a hardcover copy of "A Christmas Carol" with the original illustrations. It is a pretty little volume, red with gold lettering and gilding on the pages.

It was a short, fun read. Dickens has some lovely descriptions and some rather clever turns of phrase. Of course which of us hasn't seen some adaptation or another of this book in film or play form? Much of the dialoge was familiar, but there were still nuggets to be found that were skipped in various adaptations. I still love the line "There is more of gravy than of grave about you." Classic.

There is a reason this story is a classic and people turn to it again and again. Very much worth the read and given that it is short it might become an annual tradition. Except I'll start it the beginning of December rather than a few days before Christmas. I may just read it to the boys next year.
