Reviews: Persuasion by Jane Austen

Persuasion was one of the last books published by Ms. Austen. From what I read, it was done posthumously and I wonder if she had lived longer if it would have changed the story at all.

This was a decent, wandering story, though out of all novels my favorite was still Northanger Abbey.

There were some good quotes to be had in the story, none of which I feel like hunting down, though.

The protagonist was a sensible woman (Anne) who had refused an engagement in her early 20's and passed the subsequent eight years without attachment until her father's spending habits required her and her older sister to move house and rent their estate (baronage?) and it is rented by the sister and brother-in-law of the man she had refused.

There's much more to it, but I think I've exhausted my tolerance for storylines that are chiefly concerned with who marries who. The great excitement in the book centered around another young woman falling and suffering a rather profound concussion. A scene in which Anne kept the coolest head and coordinated the efforts to tend to the injured girl and alert the doctor and her parents' of the incident.

Again, the reading was excellent and helped keep me engaged even if the subject matter isn't my usual. I'm sure I missed some things here and there, again, I'm doing things while listening and sometimes there's background noise or I need to be more engaged in the activity I'm doing to really listen properly.

Now I need to figure out how to cancel the Audible thing. I think I'm going to have to get on the computer to do it, bugger.

I think I mentioned I'm reading "A Christmas Carol," almost done. Maybe this will be a year of more reading.
