phear me

Well, it took about 3 non-consecutive days of actually doing it, and much longer of planning it, but I have now installed CyanogenMod on my phone, so it now has android 4.4.4. This took longer than it should have, and I ended up combining two tutorials until I got something that worked (why do they tell you to sideload when you could just fucking install from zip???), but the sim card and memory cards are now transferred and I can make and receive calls, plus sign in to pay my bill. (I bought a second identical phone, because I figured there was a decent chance I could brick it trying to do this.)

It appears to get a higher version android, I may have to do even more complicated gymnastics. Sort of considering starting it on Previous Phone (was: Current Phone). Android 4.4.4 is enough for now, but I suspect I will soon run into the problem again of Apps Not Working.

But at least I didn't have to give in and buy a new kind of hardware just to get a new version of the operating system. (Buying a second identical phone doesn't count; this phone is over 3 years old, they were pretty cheap on ebay)

still to do: figure out how the hell to get rid of the haptic feedback when using the on-screen keyboard
