The number one slot for my Most. Conflicted. Love. Ever. has got to be the Olympics. Dear god, there are a million, million, million ways the Olympics as an institution are just really goddamn horrible, and the sports culture around it can be really epicly disgusting, and yet and yet AND YET zomg I love the Olympics.
Even through my hate at how NBC covers it. And this hate is immense. Because NBC thinks this is a fluffy movie that just happens to be about athletes at a sports competition and so treats covering the sports aspects accordingly.
No, I haven't forgiven Scott Hamilton for forgetting about Midori Ito wtf two years ago.
So, on the one hand, the Olympics as an institution and a reality and the whole sports culture that eats children and destroys bodies and exploits everyone for corporate gain...
And on the other hand, I love it even while knowing I'm part of the problem. Which takes a lot of love.
