While you were sleeping
Lucy Moderatz (Bullock) is a lonely token collector in Chicago [young woman] who has had a long and intense crush on a handsome commuter [acquaintance] named Peter Callaghan (Gallagher). On [a holiday], she rescues him from [a near-death situation]... She is led to muse aloud, "I was[/am] going to marry him." [But this does not turn out to be true and things get out of hand] as he falls into a coma soon afterward shows signs of mental imbalance and confusion... Lucy is caught up in panic for a number of reasons: she is embarrassed about her real relationship with Peter, uncertain of her fate, and she has quickly come to love being a part of Peter's big and loving family.
With no family [nearby] and few but more than a few good friends, Lucy becomes so captivated with the quirky Callaghans and their unconditional love for her that she cannot bring herself to hurt them [or herself] by revealing that Peter doesn't even [talk to her anymore]. She spends a belated Christmas with them and then meets his younger brother Jack (Pullman), who follows in his [brother's] footsteps [one year later]. He is suspicious of uncertain of her at first, but he grows to care for her as they spend time together.
They develop a close friendship and soon after she starts to fall in love with him as well.
