I went up to school today to chat with my school counselor, who I needed a letter of recommendation from. We talked, and he was like, "...Why did you get deferred??" and I explained about my class rank and my GPA and all that other business, and he was like, "That's... wrong. That must be wrong." I was afraid he might be just saying that, but he actually called the main high school and had a chat with the people up there.
Here's what's up: because I went to Reese Alternative High School (sister school to Frenship--not Friendship--High), I graduated on the "minimum" plan because I couldn't take some courses at Reese (i.e. the rest of my foreign language credits, and fine arts credits) because they don't offer them. Reese is a "credit recovery program." So, the fact that they don't offer some courses that kids might need to recover... is bogus.
Anyways--so, I graduated "minimum," instead of "recommended." THEREFORE, I was ranked at the BOTTOM OF THE RANKING. Like, everyone who graduated from Frenship on the "recommended" plan, is ranked first, and then everyone on the "minimum" plan is ranked BELOW them, SEPERATELY.
Get this: I'M AT THE TOP OF MY CLASS! Hahahahaha. I'm number one out of twenty three who graduated on the minimum plan. Hahahaha, awesome, no?
So, with my GPA (3.45) and my average grade (86), had I been on the "recommended" plan? I would have graduated 170-180 out of 345 INSTEAD of my current rank: 311 of 345.
So -there-. Mr. V, my school counselor, said he would say this in his letter to UNT, which is awesome.
As I was leaving, I told Mr. V I would be PROUD to have Reese Alternative High School on my diploma, and that I wanted Reese, NOT FRENSHIP, on my class ring. He was so tickled and pleased with this remark, he had me repeat it to the principal, and she said, "Ohhh, that's sweet! Well, you know, Kate, you're so important to us at Reese." And I felt so heart-warmed!
I also told my other teacher that gave me a letter, Mr. Ashcraft, what I've always thought: he reminds me of my father. He laughed and laughed, and I told him, "If you ever get a chance to talk to Dr. Gale, do so!" and he laughed and said, "Yeah, I'll tell him, 'So about that little girl of your's...' " He's pretty cool, that Mr. Ashcraft. (And he really is so much like my dad.)
As I drove off into the flat plains of Lubbock, back to my house, "All You Need Is Love" by the Beatles came on, and I felt so... -elated-.
