"So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be." - The Perks of Being a Wallflower
I went camping with friends at Wheatley Provincial Park over the weekend and passed a peaceful afternoon reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower before taking a walk to the beach and contemplating my existence with my feet in the lake, which is the only true way to contemplate one's existence. I loved the book, maybe because I was a teen in the 90s and I was a wallflower like Charlie and still am. I loved the beach because it was clean and lovely and one of those beaches where, to get to the water, you have to descend a slope that leads down from a fairly steep cliff, which always make me think of King Lear. The winding paths through the woods at the park made me wish I'd brought my running shoes for early morning runs through dappled light. Late Saturday there was a misguided jaunt through these same woods in the dark that had me thinking of The Blair Witch Project and Cabin in the Woods and, you know, every other horror flick set in the wilderness ever. Evidently we were in pursuit of some jubilant voices in the night. I have strange friends, but at least they're mine. And then there was the whole matter of the showers having to be activated by a shiny object waved in front of a sensor, and only for two minute intervals.
Tuesday brought the new Killers single and suddenly all was good in the universe once again. "Runaways" is soaring anthem-y goodness. It is Brandon Flowers doing his glammed-up Springsteen once again, as in "Dustland Fairytale". (No, but seriously. Go listen to "Dustland Fairytale", and tell me you can't imagine Bruce Springsteen singing a bare-bones slowed down version of it. Full-hearted Americana, young love tempered by reality. Think "The River". "Then I got Mary pregnant, and man, that was all she wrote.") SO GOOD.
Also so good: Game of Thrones. Book and show, though I am through season one but not through the whole first book yet. Daenerys is my homegirl, and maybe I shouldn't, but I ship her and Ser Jorah like mad. I suspect I won't feel the same way about the book characters once I get to their interactions, given the fact that book!Daenerys is so young, but the subtext and chemistry between Miss Stormborn and her loyal knight in the show are undeniable, and Emilia Clarke and Iain Glen are both so pretty. Also, DRAGONS + compelling writing and acting that makes me fall in love with Sean Bean + Peter Dinklage being awesome as always.
This is my favourite quote so far:
"You think my life is such a precious thing to me, that I would trade my honor for a few more years… of what? You grew up with actors. You learned their craft, and you learned it well. But I grew up with soldiers. I learned how to die a long time ago."
I can't wait to see where Arya's story takes her. She is going to grow up to kick ass and take some names, I can tell.
Okay, I will stop there, because really I could go on and on and on.
I'm seeing The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX with friends tomorrow night. Ask me how excited I am. SO FLIPPING EXCITED.
