Ohmijeez, Scott is going to attack this post like it's a two-four of Sleeman's, but it must be written. Bring it on, homeboy.
Credit goes to Rita Mae Brown for the cut tag text, not me.
Has anyone seen the trailer for
Brokeback Mountain? (If you haven't, and you're interested, you can see it by first clicking
HERE and then clicking on "Trailer" under "Links:") I just happened to catch it while lurking about at
ohnotheydidnt today. Just, you know, completely by accident. Someone also posted a link in comments to an online full text copy of the story the movie is based on as well, and I went through it. To be honest, I skimmed a bit, which is not to say that it wasn't good, just that I found it difficult to read off my computer screen, what with the serif font it was typed in and all that. Oh, but don't worry, I managed to get all the important bits. Most definitely.
Anyway, I do mean to arrive at my point (or complete lack thereof) shortly. A couple of the ONTD-ers expressed the following opinions, and I tend to agree:
1. The trailer is... meh, a little boring. Someone said something about the blatant exclusion of the more interesting parts, (i.e., the bits with gayness in them), being one of the major problems, and that those particular parts may have been left out intentionally so as not to freak out any North American moviegoers who can't handle the sight of two lovely grown men getting physical with each other.
2. A point was made about Hollywood and the trouble it seems to have making movies in which the main characters are gay that end happily.
Regarding #1, there have been a lot of shitty trailers out recently to movies that I actually do still have some desire to see. I can't help but wonder if the person who made the trailer for Brokeback Mountain was the same person who made the one for Stay. I guess you just have to reserve judgement until you see the actual film. From what I read, the story behind BBM, (by
Annie Proulx), is tragic and beautiful, not to mention quite well-written. Also, I personally have thoroughly enjoyed every movie I've seen Heath Ledger in, even if he doesn't do accents all that well. I haven't seen a lot of Jake's work, and oh how I hated what little I saw of Donnie Darko, but I've heard good things about the kid. I have most definitely heard good things. (Aaaand I almost just typed that as "I have most definitely heard gay things." Whee, Freudian.)
As for the rest of #1, well, I don't get why there can be hetero sex scenes up the wazoo in movies and, you know, the movie maybe gets an 'R' rating, but nobody makes a fuss, and then you have a movie like Alexander, which goes WAY out of its way to show us Alexander's personal life, but doesn't even have the decency to give us one good Alexander-Hephaestion kiss. I heard rumblings of a filmed A/H sex scene that never made it into the final product, but how about that Colin Farrell/Rosario Dawson sex scene? That sure as heck didn't get cut out! *facepalm*
All I'm saying is that, if I go see BBM for a good story and some gay cowboy sex, there had damned well better be (a good story and) some gay cowboy sex. For real.
#2 is tough, because obviously this movie is based on a story and they can't go about changing the ending, but the poster makes a good point. The only "gay/lesbian" movie I can think of with a happy ending is But I'm a Cheerleader, (which was great and you should all see it if you haven't already), and it was packaged and sold as a comedy, so maybe it doesn't even count. I'm all for a good tragedy, but, in this case, it might be nice to see something different every once in a while. Maybe I just need to see more g/l flicks. Maybe the happy endings are out there and I just haven't found them yet. [Jedi mind trick] You will not make a dirty joke out of my use of "happy endings" in this context. [/Jedi mind trick]
Anyhoo, just thought I would share that with y'all. The movie comes out in December, and I do believe that I'll be seeing it if I can. I'll be the one sitting alone in the back of the theatre trying my best not to squeak through all the steamy scenes (or throwing jujubes at the screen if I am left unsatisfied).
We're leaving for our weekend of camping fun tomorrow afternoon. I'll probably post again before we take off, but if not, I'll be back Sunday. It should be a good time. I'm going prepped for rain and lots o' bugs, like the good little camper that I am. Yep.
EDIT: I am recalling now that I quite liked Jake in The Good Girl. Definitely wanted Jennifer Aniston's character to end up with his. Definitely. *swears that she is not intentionally channeling Rain Man*
