A collection of random things that happened or came across my mind recently. This post will not be exciting.

Yesterday heehaw_tng and I went to IKEA to pick up a few things. Even though it did not turn into a crazy shopping spree, it still cost me a chunk of change and was the largest amount I've spent on home goods/furnishings since we were there with corneredangel. Closet organizers, magazine racks, and finally a bread box (which we would have bought last time, except heehaw_tng left it by accident on the conveyor belt unpurchased). Set as much up yesterday as possible. The apartment isn't noticeably different, just better in small ways. We still need to get some sort of auxiliary shelf for the bathroom.

What we did buy was the shoe storage I've been craving since practically the beginning, which was always out-of-stock or I didn't have the ability to carry it. I carried that and had heehaw_tng carry everything else home. We were there after closing, partly because I didn't know it closed at 9 now (I thought it was 10). The buses stop running at 9, which sucks. We took the city bus to Fulton Street and walked to DeKalb, which was a great idea in concept but a terrible idea when we crossed the construction site just as the wind picked up, pelting us with sand. I used the storage unit as a buffer, but I'm still picking grains out of my hair.

I noticed that they're now charging for the Water Taxi. You have to pay $5 to ride from Manhattan but if you spend $10 or more you'll get a $5 credit. And the trip back is free if you show a receipt. I guess too many commuters were taking the taxi. Apparently it's still free on weekends.

In other news...

Thinking about District 9. While I appreciate that they didn't feel the need to dumb the movie down, I felt it would have benefited from time stamps on more of the documentary footage. While the "real-life" scenes were labeled with a rough time frame, the news footage was a jumble. I don't think those scenes really benefited from being ambiguous.

Additionally, assuming the movie was intended for international audiences, it might have been a good idea to pick a more standard name for the main character. I know it's set in South Africa and I know the name is Afrikaans, but I didn't even know/remember what the guy's name was for half the film. I only remembered after they started plastering it on the TV screens. It didn't distract me from the film itself, but I spent a good chunk of my viewing just calling him "the main character" or more common, "the biggest douchebag in the universe."

And on the slightly spoilery side... of True Blood, how the hell did Jason Stackhouse shoot the paint gun so accurately? Because of the round shape of paint balls, shouldn't the balls actually curve slightly due to wind resistance? (That's why muskets sucked, and why bullets have the shape they do now.)

See, I told you this post wasn't exciting.
