Scene: the train I rode in to work this morning
Mother: Look, the train's going to go underground now.
Child: YAY!
me (internal dialogue): How sweet that kids can experience a yay moment at a time and place like this. For me, that would require at least an empty seat, preferably facing forward. I might even be moved to a mental happy dance if I should land the single seat in that sweet spot behind the door on certain trains--the one that's effectively caged in by stairs and handrails, thus shielding one lucky passenger from the usual onslaught of elbows, wet umbrellas, laptop bags, and squash racquets.
Child: It's so dark and dirty. Who goes down here?
Mother: Nobody. Just the workers.
Child (sighs): I sure don't want to be a worker.
Mother: So, go to college.
