2a) Heck yeah, every year. Where would we be without definitive answers to such weighty questions as:
Why is "high definition" two words as a noun, but hyphenated as an adjective, while "high-tech" is always hyphenated?
Answer: Cuz the AP says so. "High definition (n)," "high-definition (a)," and "high-tech" all "new entries" this year--maybe next year "high tech (n)" will be in the "changes and updates" section.
2b) Boy, could I tell you stories about the hyphen. From typewriter keys to Alt-key commands--whooo! But for some reason, everybody but Boo has claimed prior obligations before I've finished telling the complete history of the hyphen.
There are some new words in this edition: IED! mad cow disease! air ball! Interesting signs of the times.
Also, the rules for capitalization of letters in headlines have changed. Instead of capitalizing nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions of five letters or more, first and last words, hyphenated compound words, and articles that follow an em dash or a colon (breath), all we have to do now is capitalize the first word and any proper nouns. Yipppeeeeeeeeeee!
