Broken: Young Speed had cried non-stop when he found out he’d broken his hand. It had nothing to do with the pain and everything to do with the fear that he’d never get to be a racer. To make him feel better Rex drew a “magic symbol” on his red cast that looked a lot like the Mach 5 except the ’5’ was an ’S’ and told him it would make him a drive better than before. To prove his point he had taken Speed to the go kart track and “lost” miserably to his younger brother in several races.

Student: Rex was normally an excellent and friendly student to everyone. But one afternoon he’d come home all torn up with a bloody lip.

“He was bad mouthing Speedy! So I broke his nose!” He told his mother as she cleaned the gash in his lip. She tried hard to reprimanded him but the entire time she couldn‘t hide the smile on her face. He really was an excellent big brother.

Attraction: “What’s a traction, Rex?”

“It’s the rubbing between a tire and the road.”

“No no no, not traction… attraction.”

“Oh!… Mmm… It’s when you really really really like someone. Why?”

“Trixie said she had an attraction to me.”

“That’s sweet.”

“I can’t wait to go to school tomorrow and tell her I have an attraction to you, Rex!”

Treaty: They were both tired, cold and in desperate need of dry clothes. So they called a truce in their snow ball fight until after lunch and a cup of hot chocolate.

Act: Sometimes in the early morning before anyone else had waken up, Speed would sneak into his brother’s room cause he’d get lonely. Sometimes Rex would hear his brother open the door and only pretend to be asleep until Speed was right next to the bed then suddenly jump up and pull the young racer down on the bed where he’d tickle the snot out of him and Speed’s squeals would wake the rest of the household.

Won: Rex won stuff all the time, Speed had never won anything in his life. So when Rex gave him a dollar at the fair and he’d actually won a little stuffed bear he’d named it Rex, cherished it and carried it around everywhere. Even at school where he got made fun of for it.

Kiss: “What’s a French kiss, Rex?” Speed asked innocently while he and Rex sat in the restaurant trying to figure out what they wanted to eat.

“Where’d you hear that?!” Rex had nearly choked on his cola.

“Trixie said she heard some other girls at school talking about it.”

“It’s… umm… hoo-boy… you kids.” Rex looked around trying to find a way to avoid the question all together or just give any answer but the correct one, “French kiss… is… umm… French toast!” He said suddenly, looking down at his menu, “Yeah! It’s French toast with tons of extra syrup and powdered sugar.” Rex sighed to himself in relief, thinking he’d handled that pretty well.

“Do you know what you want, yet?” The waitress had walked up and Speed raised his hand up happily.

“Can I get a French Kiss, please!?”

“Oh God… Spe~~~d!” Rex buried his face in his hands, turning about 20 different shades of red.

Safe: The storm outside just seemed to get worse and worse but Speed felt safe as he snuggled up next to Rex in his big brothers bed. Even if he did flinch every time the thunder boomed.

Curiosity: “Hey Rex? What’s---” Speed had started to ask with his usual curious tone of voice.

“I’ll tell you when you’re older Speedy.” Rex didn’t even want to know anymore. It was his answer every time now.

Always: “I’d cry so hard if you suddenly weren’t my brother Rex. You’re the coolest brother I’ve ever had!” Even now Speed teared up a bit at the thought of it.

“Well then there’s no problem. I’ll always be your brother Speed. No matter what.” Rex smiled and threw an arm around Speed’s shoulder.

“Good! Cause you’re awesome, Rex!” Speed had snuggled down and was close to falling asleep. Rex just let him and smiled sadly. How weird of Speed to say that when he’d already put into motion his plan to leave his life behind forever. He just hoped Speed never forgot what he’d said.
