Title: Two Way Lie.
Pairing: X/Speed
Rating: PG-13
Summary: How can a lie be bad… when it gives you such happiness?
Words: 552
Notes: Written for Promt 3 in Speed_fic! "Truth is beautiful, without doubt; but so are lies." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

X’s POV:

If the truth will set us free and a lie will keep you in my arms… Then I will makes this lie sweeter than honey so that neither of us can resist.

X smiled sadly, watching Speed sleep with his head in X‘s lap. He had never meant it to come to this. He’d never wanted to hurt Speed more than he already had. Dire circumstances had pulled them apart… and now fate seemed to enjoy the twisted irony of giving the young Racer feelings for him and vice versa. He had tried to run away from Speed, had tried to make it look as if he were cold and unfeeling. But as he left the Grand Prix that night he tried to keep walking even as he heard Speed yelling for him to stop.

“Please!! Wait!… Don’t GO! X!!”

It had been the sound of Speed’s voice when he said X that had made him stop. It sounded like his heart was breaking. He stopped, fighting the tears in his eyes as he turned around and Speed slammed into him, knocking the wind out of both of them but Speed didn’t dare move, his arms tightly around X’s waist as if he might try and disappear any second. He could feel Speed’s entire body shaking with quiet sobs. X’s heart pounded in his ears, his jaw clenching. It had taken everything he had as a man to refuse Speed like he had been and he felt his resolution shatter… he just didn’t have the strength anymore.

He pulled Speed closer, one hand cradling his head. He tried to laugh.

“Why are you crying? It’s okay. I’m not… going anywhere.”

~~**~~

He hadn’t either and now he was in over his head. Speed smiled peacefully in his sleep and X couldn’t remember ever having seen him happier, even as the world champion racer. He found it hard to believe that he, who had been the source of so much pain for Speed was now the very thing that made him happiest. Gently, X brushed Speed’s misbehaving hair out of his face and Speed’s eyes opened lazily and he looked into X’s eyes, that smile never leaving his face as he nuzzled X’s leg and closed his eyes again.

If a lie was all it took to keep that smile permanently on Speed’s face and truth would destroy it forever. X was damn certain which he’d rather live.

Speed’s POV:

Too many things had happened up until now to make Speed Racer second guess himself. Racer X, Richie Donovan, Rex Racer… it didn’t matter to Speed what name or what face he went by… all that mattered was he was there. It had been a brilliant lie and in fact, Speed had never told him the truth about just how much he knew. He never would, either. He would do anything to keep things how they were right now. Even if it meant going along with this lie. It might have been wrong but as Speed lifted himself up and kissed him, he was pretty sure this lie could lead straight to hell itself and it would be the best decision he’d ever made in his life.
