“I know I could never be… like Re…your brother. But… I mean. If you ever wanted… or needed.” X stammered on. He was one of the toughest men in the world and in front of Speed Racer he was reduced to a stammering idiot. If only he could tell him how he felt. He knew it was too much to ask to be that big a part in Speed’s life ever again but he thought that maybe if Speed just knew he’d be willing… it might be enough.
Speed smiled, closing the gap between them and wrapping his arms up around X’s neck and placing his head on X’s chest.
“You could never be like my brother.” Speed spoke gently, the slightest bit of sadness edging his voice like a frost and X felt his heart sink and shatter like a chunk of ice.
“I’m sorry.” X started to pull away from Speed but Speed held him tight, not letting him go.
“Let me finish, please!” Speed looked up at him with pleading eyes, “I have to say this and you need to hear it!” There was a sense of urgency to Speed’s words that made X’s broken heart wrench. He could feel the tensing of Speed’s body and knew he was preparing for the final blow, the one that would send them spiraling apart forever. Like it should be.
“You could never be like my brother.” Speed said again, and as he did he moved his hands from X’s neck, having undone the fasteners to his mask he slid it off much to X’s discomfort. Behind the mask he was safe from the world and its harsh realities… without it… he was just a man… a man could be hurt, the shadow of a man could not. Which is exactly why Speed wanted to talk to… the man X… not the mask. Speed smiled softly.
“You can’t be like my brother. You may not look like him anymore, but you ARE my brother… that will never change. No matter what kind of mask you wear.” Speed couldn’t contain his smile any longer, smiling brightly at him like he had as a child. Nothing but the strongest of devotions and love for the one person in the world that meant everything to him.
X found he couldn’t even begin to argue. Never in his life had be been so afraid of the words that could come from a person. So when he finally heard what Speed had been trying to say his eyes could only widen and his mouth parted to speak but nothing came out. It was the shock of hearing the complete opposite come from those lips. Not rejection… acceptance… pure and unfiltered. He just couldn’t deny it anymore… not while staring directly into that smiling face, unable to hide his own expression the he was certain was betraying him right now. Nothing but love in return showing in his eyes.
Speed watched on fully satisfied that he’d finally broken through to him. He’d always been stubborn but Speed had always been able to find ways around that. A whole new door swung open in front of them now and slowly as X’s expression softened and his arms found their way around Speed’s waist and Speed’s back around X’s neck they crossed the imaginary threshold into a future that promised them everything they ever wanted.
“Speed…” X tried to speak and Speed shook his head to silence him, still smiling.
“Welcome home.” Was all Speed whispered and they stared at one another before they both closed the distance between them. Sealing the occasion with a kiss.
