2010 FanFic Review

Jan 01, 2011 13:59

Well, I've just woken up in the New Year! Sitting in my brother-in-law's bed (LOL THE HUSBAND AND I ARE USING IT, GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER) and decided that I had a wee bit of time to fill out this here nifty FanFic Review.

And when I get home tomorrow I have something around 100 comments to reply to... oh god. And then all the fic catching up and post catching up and oh god okay I'm not going to think about all that right now, let's just get to the fic part!

Fics published this year:
Um... I've published TWENTY-SIX FICS this year, so I'm not going to list them all here. Check out my Masterlist if you're desperate to see.

Saying that, this is my first year in the world of fanfic. I published my first ever attempt at fanfic, Textual Attraction, on February 19, 2010. Jeez. That feels like a lifetime ago. I still love that fic, and apparently other people still enjoy that fic, because they're still commenting on it!

For a grand total of: Approximately 164,170 words...

Overall Thoughts:

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?: Considering the fact that I assumed Textual Attraction would be my first and final foray into the world of fanfic, yes, I've written heaps more than I ever imagined I would. I never thought I'd actually become ingrained into the beautiful and fun fandom of Trek and RPF.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?: Um, I never thought I'd write Bones/Gaila. Which is funny because rainbowstrlght had the same answer as me, but there you go! Also, writing Pinto... yeah, I'm still not so confident with that hehe.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?: Oh wow, um... The happiest. I need to consult my Masterlist! I think Half a Dream Away. Although for the past months I've been feeling the need to go over it with a fine-tooth comb because there is so much I want to edit - still, at the time, it made me very happy.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?: Writing sex. It's still daunting for me, but I do my best at it. rainbowstrlght helps me immensely, as do the fanfic writers whose sex scenes I read over and over in attempts to try and understand how they do what they do so magnificently haha.

From my past year of writing, what was....

My best story of this year: Textual Attraction, to be honest. It has four pages of comments, which still boggles my mind. I'm kind of biased towards it because it was my ~first love~, but that's my answer!

My most popular story of this year: Keep Calm and Conceal Vulcans. People love that shit for some reason. Must be all the swearing and UST ;)

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Ummmm, to be perfectly honest, I don't feel that way about any of my fics. When I post a fic it's never with the expectation that I'm going to get a load of comments or whatever. It's nice and very kind, but I write for myself first and foremost, and as long as I like it, then it's all okay.

And really? The fics I've written that I've cared for the least are almost always mirrored by the readers. What I love, they tend to - and what I'm meh about, they seem to reciprocate that feeling. So I'm very very rarely disappointed by anything like being under-appreciated or whatever.

Most fun story to write: That's hard. A lot of my short stories are the most fun for me to write. Things like the Kelvin!Verse Series, as well as This Fire (which I have another part written while I was on holiday), Vengeance, Can it, Hot Tamale, and Teenage Kicks were all a BLAST to write. I'm going to settle on the Kelvin!Verse, though.

Story with the single sexiest moment: Er... the sexiest moment that comes to mind as actually from a fic that hasn't been published yet (Saudade) - damn! LOL, but um if I had to choose, then I think I'll go with the desk sex in Tear You Apart.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Okay, again, my unpublished fic, Saudade, has some really wrong moments in it, too, but as for my published works... Oh, well obviously it has to be Mirror!Kirk decimating Romulus in Vengeance.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Half a Dream Away. I don't know. Jim was more trusting than he is in most fic, which was new and interesting to write. I felt like he definitely had the capacity for such loyalty, and it remained within his canon characterisation that he could trust someone purely through his own tenacity and will-power.

Hardest story to write: Lord, any Pinto fic? Yeah, I'll just leave it at that. Also, Not Your Average Juliet, which I basically hated so much that it was completed and I wasn't even going to post it. A couple people had to pry it from my hands.

Biggest Disappointment: Again, Not Your Average Juliet. Not because of how it was received by readers, but because of how much I personally didn't like it.

Biggest Surprise: Textual Attraction, obviously. Who knew?

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: Ohhhh, this is a good one. Pretty easy, though. Almost all of Jim from Keep Calm and Conceal Vulcans is based off of me.

Fic-writing goals for 2011: Basically to complete all of the WIPs you see in my Masterlist. Saudade Part One is nearing completion, and I'm in various states of undress with the rest of the fics - but they all have a shape and a plot that I have to work from. I'm particularly excited to share Pocaspocktas, Saudade, and Fidelity.

Here's to a year of creativity! (And my second year in the fandom!)
