Our two adopted Taiwanese children are officially next of kin, the U.S. government says. So do they get U.S. citizenship? Let's take a poll. Good, you all said no (insert expletive) way. We need to get Green Cards first. That has set us back $770 plus mailing fees. We're waiting for the National Visa Center in New Hampshire to review our documents, which are nearly the same as those we mailed their sister agency Uck-Cyst (USCIS) for next of kin recognition. Two noteworthy moments in the nine-month Green Card process: One, when the Visa Center computer system wouldn't work, we called long distance to New Hampshire and were told sorry, it's fine, must be your browser's fault. It wasn't. Second, when we asked the U.S. consular office in Taipei where to mail our documents, they told us they weren't authorized to take any action on our case.
