A quater of a century and I feel old already. What have I achieved? Alexander had conquered most of the known world by this age. I have not even begun on my career. I'm still in school!!!!
It ironic that with the advances made in agriculture, biotechnology, health care and nutrition, our physical bodies reach puberty faster and experience growth faster. Yet we marry later and mature later. Alexander commanded the left wing of his father's calvary at 16. At 16 we were still little boys stressing over pimples, parents and the O-levels. And I'm pretty sure not many fancy the thought of being drafted into the army in just two years time. I certainly didnt. Such a contrast of the world today with the world 2400 years ago.
But in case any accuses me of being narrow minded and not seeing the big picture, I admit there are many more great achievers in our own time than Alexander's time. And that Alexander is called great for a reason. History has not given the title "the-great" to anyone else but him. So yes, I might be making an unreasonable comparison with an extreme over-achiever.
I guess I dont want to be lost in a sea of mediocrity. I dont desire a long life. I want to be a shooting star. Bright and brilliant but only for moment. And forever remembered by those who saw its beauty.
