Previous Chapter
The next few days were a great test to Nino’s strength, he tried to act normal but sometimes he could feel his own smile being too fake and his eyes avoided any sweet gesture between the couple. At those times, he could count with Ohno’s help, even when he didn’t talk too much he would make a remark and drive the attention to himself. But while all this was happening, he didn’t notice the pair of eyes that followed every one of his moves, those deep eyes were starting to understand all the situation, first with shock and then with pity and something else.
What happened this day changed everything.
He was there to meet the others, at the usual coffee shop, but he got there early and cursed his fate for it because just a moment later Sho-kun made his entrance… alone.
“Hi Nino-kun”
“Oh, hello Sho-kun. Where is Aiba?”
“He is gonna be a little late, but he’ll be here”
“Oh, okay”
Then, awkward silence…
“And your cousin?” Nino tried to break the silence
“Jun?” There was a pause “He must be on his way. Why do you ask?”
That question throw Nino off “I- I don’t know, just asking”
Another silence.
“I saw you before, you know”
Nino was shocked, does he remember me?
“I don’t think you remember but I saw you in a baseball game before” Sho continued.
Nino’s hands started to sweat; he had to hide them under the table. He didn’t know what to say, should he say the truth?
“Nino-kun?” Sho said in a tender voice that made Nino’s heart beat faster, damn he was just starting to control it.
Luckily, before he could say anything Jun walk to them, looking at them with suspicious eyes that made Nino even more uncomfortable.
“You guys are early” was his salute.
“Yeah, we are waiting f-“
“Nino-kun, you look flustered, is everything okay?” even if the question showed concern there was none in his tone, it sounded more like a scold, and this time Nino noticed.
“Yes, it is just so hot today, we should order some drinks, right?”
“I’ll treat you, Nino-kun” without expecting an answer, Jun called the waitress and ordered drinks for he and Nino only, and sat down next to Nino, close, very close.
They started light conversation but the air was charge with anxiety. The others came and they started planning the day ahead of them, all the time Jun stayed next to him and paying more attention than ever before under the curious stare from the others.
After the cinema and the hamburgers, when was time to say goodbye, Jun offered to walk with him to his house, and although he tried to refuse he realized that Jun didn’t care if he did. While walking the air relaxed which was weird, Nino expected to be tense but truthfully he felt calm.
Jun talked just when they were in front of his house.
“Nino-kun, you like videogames right?”
“Oh, yes”
“You wouldn’t mind me coming to play with you, right?”
“Eh?”
“It’s that Sho plays terrible and I get bored. I really like videogames you know…”
Who was Nino to refuse a video gamer like him “Ah, okay”
Jun hugged Nino briefly “Thank you Nino-kun, I’ll be here tomorrow early, bye!” Jun was so fast with the hug and the goodbye that Nino didn’t got the chance to respond.
Certainly Jun’s attitude lately seemed strange but he preferred not to think about it, he has bigger problems to deal with, said that problem was Sho and their previous conversation. Why would he say that? Even if he remembered Nino, why bring it out now and not when they were introduced. Another headache was coming his way, he better not to think much about it and go to sleep early. He would need his energy tomorrow to beat the crap out of Jun. That guy isn’t so bad after all, he though.
The next morning Jun came early to his house, he really was good at games and he seemed to enjoy playing with Nino; by the afternoon Nino was already very comfortable with Jun’s presence, they joked and tease each other, Nino really enjoy himself after a long time, and for that he was thankful.
They didn’t have any plans to hang out with the others that day so it was okay to be just the two of them. When his parents came home, they were still playing; Nino even showed Jun a magic trick that he was learning. He haven’t told anyone of this new hobby of his, but he felt that Jun was already his friend and he can be trusted to keep it from everyone until he was better at it, besides he needed someone to practice.
The first time it didn’t go so well and Nino was a little discouraged, but Jun grabbed his hand and looking directly to his eyes said “Try it again”. So Nino did, and a few times later his firs trick was a success. He was so happy.
Nino’s parents did take a liking of his new friend and invited Jun to stay for dinner; they had a pleasant conversation with a lot of teasing of Nino, who was pouting the whole time in an adorable way. When it was his time to leave Nino accompanied him to the door, not before his parents told Jun that he could come whenever he likes.
“Today was fun. Did you have fun Nino-kun?”
“Yeah, thanks for coming. You are good… but not better than me” Nino was teasing him.
“It’s too early to say that, don’t you think? I should thank you though, being around Sho isn’t that much fun you know”
In the whole day he was having so much fun that he forgot about Sho, and now they were talking about him.
“Can I come tomorrow” Jun cut his thoughts.
“Eh? Again? Sorry, sure you can come, but aren’t we going to meet the others?”
“Yeah, right... But that it’s in the afternoon. I can come a couple of hours before and we can play until it’s time. What do you think?”
“Ah,… okay I guess…”
“If I didn’t know you better I would say you are afraid of me.”
“No, that’s not it at all” Nino felt like he had to make that clear right away. “Wait, why would I be afraid of you?” Nino played along.
“I don’t know, maybe that you like me already” there was again that smirk of the first day.
Before Nino got to respond Jun hugged him again and left.
But Nino wasn’t mad, oh no, he was amused. Next time, he promised, next time Jun will not have the last word.
