Alas! I'm very sorry to hear that. One hopes you can find other funding soon - your research is seriously more applicable than mine, Mr. "I do Awesome Security Shit." I should put you in touch with a certain friend of mine who's somewhat responsible for RFID, actually, if you like, for geekery's sake if nothing else.
Funding shouldn't be an issue for me... It's just mostly for the prestige (and the extra $400-$500/mo. stipend...)
I'm a little curious why they only squeezed 286 extra fellowships out of their ARRA funds (they got $45.56 million, which should be enough for ~375 fellowships, but maybe some of that money will be deferred to next year?), but I'm not too concerned.
Yeah, I don't know; maybe they reserved some money for the next few years to buffer? I really have no clue. The whole way that the federal government funds things is honestly a black box with a crazy witch lady with a crystal ball going "ooooo I see an NSF grant in your future" and cackling.
They only suck for bureaucratic and taxation reasons, 'tis true. And since grad students in my program usually make ~$22k, and I'm making ~$32k due to two two-year fellowships, it's nice; I'll put off the NSF one year to do some teaching next year, then have a total of five years at the $30k level, aka having a better lifestyle than I might have otherwise.
