Aiba gently stroked through his hair while he listened carefully to the music of the concert he was watching. Ohno bought him two tickets for the New Year’s Eve jazz concert because he knew that Aiba played the saxophone before, but the main reason was actually that he had no idea what else to give his bandmate as a birthday present. Since Aiba was spending this New Year’s Eve with Sho for the first time, he was accompanied by his partner. Surprisingly both of them really started to like the music and moved their heads to the flow of the music. Aiba turned his head slightly to Sho and saw the satisfied smile on his lover's face while he was holding his hand tightly. It made Aiba's heart jump - he was never happier. With Sho on his side, he felt complete.
While he was looking at Sho the sudden sound of a familiar tone was ringing in his ears. Slowly he looked back at the concert stage where the main saxophonist was now standing in the middle of the place and playing his heart out. The sound of the saxophone was filling the concert hall and Aiba felt a sudden sadness in his heart.
Ever since he was a child, Aiba played the saxophone - and loved it. Every sound that the sax made filled his body with a pleasant feeling and he felt calm and happy. But since he had his first pneumothorax in 2002, he wasn’t able to play his favourite music instrument anymore, because it would overstrain his lungs. Of course it was a big shock for him to give up the sax, but he never thought that it would still have this strong impact on him, even after several years have passed.
The longer he listened to the music playing, the more the look on his face got serious, the bright smile that he normally always showed changed into a sad pensive expression. Sho noticed that something was wrong with his lover since he felt that Aiba's hand slowly gave in, resting on Sho's, but not really holding it anymore. The older man looked at Aiba who was trapped in his thoughts while he was still staring at the saxophonist. Sho knew immediately what his partner was thinking about in that moment and put Aiba's hand in between his palms to distract his lover at least a bit from the painful thought of never going to be able to play saxophone again.
After the concert Aiba seemed to be as trapped in his thoughts as before. On their way home he absent-mindedly looked out of the car window, his eyes following the dozen of street lights. Neither Sho nor Aiba said a word. After Sho opened the door to their apartment, Aiba directly went into the kitchen, opened the door of the fridge and poured some tea in a glass that was standing close to him. He took a quick sip and put it back on the counter before he exhaled deeply.
Just stop thinking about it, idiot, he thought while he was taking a firm grip on the counter. The sound of the saxophone kept getting stuck in his head and he quickly shook it hoping that the music would disappear. His head was driving him crazy - he didn’t want to get reminded of his loss every time he listened to the sax. Suddenly he felt two arms gripping him from behind. Sho was resting his head on Aiba's right shoulder and buried his face near the taller man's ear. The touch of Sho's nose against his neck made him snap out of his thoughts and he slowly put his hands on Sho's arms. They rested in this position until Sho made the first move to comfort his Aiba a bit.
“It still hurts you, doesn’t it...? Hearing the saxophone, but not being allowed to play it anymore..” His words surprised Aiba at first, but then the taller man formed a light smile and leaned his head slightly on Sho's. He just knew him too well - Sho could read every concern that was written on Aiba's face and heart.
“I just want to play it again so badly. I really miss it, Sho-chan” Aiba's voice trembled and he tried to hold back his tears. Slowly Sho turned Aiba around; pressing his chest on his partner's while still holding him in his muscular arms.
“You still have your old sax, right?” Surprised Aiba looked at Sho and nodded “Give it to me” Sho added after Aiba's nod and smiled. At first Aiba wanted to say something, but he figured that Sho would insist on taking the sax. So without any further hesitation he quickly entered their bedroom, opened the closet and took out his saxophone which was safely stored in a leather case. As he was walking out of the bedroom, Sho was standing in their living room pointing at the sofa.
“Sit down” he commanded and crossed his arms.
Without protesting the younger man sat down on their red sofa, holding the saxophone case tightly. Sho silently took the instrument out of his hands and placed himself between Aiba's legs so that his back was pressed against his partner's chest. Sho could feel how Aiba's heart was slowly beating faster and faster which made him smile. He put the case on the table, opened it and saw the golden shining saxophone in front of him. There wasn’t a single scratch on the instrument - it was well looked after and Aiba cleaned it regularly even though he was not able to play anymore. Sho could see how much love Aiba put into the sax and smiled even brighter than before. Carefully he took the saxophone out of the case and placed it between his hands while Aiba was following his lover's movements.
“Take it” he said quietly and Aiba followed his order. The younger man was staring at the instrument - how long has it been since he had it in his hands like he was going to play it any second? It felt good, but the sadness once again started to take over. Before he could think about it any further, he could see Sho putting his mouth on the mouthpiece. A surprised “Eh?” escaped Aiba's mouth and he looked surprised at Sho. The older man blew into the saxophone, trying to make some sound - unfortunately he had absolutely no idea how to handle the instrument.
“Help me, Masaki.” Sho pointed at the buttons. At first Aiba was irritated and didn’t quite know what to do, but after a short time he started to press the buttons on the saxophone. Sho really tried to give it his best and blew into the mouthpiece, but it didn’t really work as well as he had planned. Aiba watched his boyfriend whose face was bright red now, not able to make any kind of sound. The taller man laughed and let himself fall back on the sofa, taking Sho with him. Surprised Sho looked back at Aiba's smiling face and immediately smirked too.
“What is this about Sho-chan?” he asked and put the saxophone on the table. Slowly Sho moved away from Aiba's legs and sat next to his lover looking straight into his eyes.
“I knew how much it hurts you to not being able to play anymore. You are always smiling, cheering everyone on, giving your best… but every time you hear the sound of the sax or you clean it, your expression changes. You seem to be down and sad... I really want you to play again.”
Sho put his arm around Aiba's shoulder and placed his right palm on his lover's cheek while looking at him intensely “And if your lungs are too weak to play, I will use mine. I want you to do what you love the most… for me there are no boundaries, Masaki. I want to support you as much as I can - even if my saxophone skills kind of suck” Sho laughed brightly and snuggled his face to Aiba's. Aiba's heart felt like it would explode any moment, he couldn’t put the feelings he felt at that time into words.
Quickly he placed his face into Sho's shoulder and sobbed without trying to make any noises. But Sho could feel the slightly wet feeling on his skin and knew that his boyfriend was crying. Gently he stroked Aiba's hair and caressed his back. Slowly the taller man lifted his head and looked with his tear-filled eyes into Sho's. He saw the loving expression on Sho's face which made his heart jump even more and he kissed the older man softly. He kissed him once, twice and then over and over again, covering Sho's lips with cute little pecks. He didn’t want to stop - he wanted to show Sho how much he loved him at that very moment. Sho smiled widely and wiped away the tears that were still coming out of Aiba's eyes before kissing his boyfriend long and passionately. They kissed and rested for a few seconds like that - no one of them wanting to ruin the moment that was filled with love.
“I love you so much, Sho-chan” Aiba's voice trembled a bit while once again telling his partner what he felt for him.
“I love you too, Masaki” Sho pulled Aiba to his chest, caressing his hair and back “I will be always on your side - we will take on every challenge there is.” Both of them looked at the saxophone that seemed to shine even more and somehow the sadness in Aiba's heart slowly went away. With Sho on his side he could manage every hurdle that would confront him in his life. That he was one-hundred percent sure of.
