Why I was awake at 1 AM this morning

Why I was awake my entire household was awake at 1 AM this morning...

Ethan and I both have the plague, or a cold, or something.  We've been sleeping a lot.  Last night, instead of going to a killer luau birthday party in Santa Barbara, we were home in bed.

And the phone started ringing.  No messages.  The house phone, then the cell phone, then the house phone, then the cell phone...pauses in between, but this was going on for a good 20 minutes.

LaGizma could sleep through a world war, but this was enough ringing even to wake her up!  Ethan was trying desperately not to be too awake, but he was well aware of it.

Thoughts started running through my head...could it be Tom and Tom calling me, drunk from the party?  No, they are way too juvenile to manage NOT to leave a message.  There would definitely be giggling and inappropriate comments if they decided to call.

Could it be someone who needs to tell me about a death in the family, and they don't want to leave a garbled message, so they want me to wake up and answer?

Could it be Madeleine, in some kind of desperate trouble?

So, I get up.  I check the history on the cell phone and I have 5 missed calls from Madeleine.  Oh no!  She's in terrible danger at SU, and I need to help her out!  I hope I can solve her problems from 3,000 miles away.

The next time the house phone rings, I pick it up:

Max:  Jessica, did I wake you up?
LzGz:  *grumpily*  Yes, what's wrong?
Max:  Oh, I can't believe I actually managed to wake you up!  Hahahaha.
LaGiz:  What's going on?  *thinking her sister is AWFUL cheery for someone in desperate trouble*
Max:  I wouldn't have called if I wasn't drunk!  Hahahaha!  Anyway, I'm calling to find out if you know So-and-so when you were in band at SU.
LaGiz:  Yes.
Max:  Cool!  Okay, it was fun to meet him, and he said he knew you.
Max:  Is Ethan going to kill me for calling this late?
LaGiz:  Yes.  Okay, bye.
