I have never seen
Dancing with the Stars, but it has restored my faith in humanity and American culture.
I don't know what channel or time this show is on, and I have never seen a single episode. I don't even think I have seen a television spot about it, since I don't watch a lot of non-DVR'ed or network television. I do read about it in People magazine quite a bit, and I read references to the show in other news articles and celebrity profiles.
I love this show because it is quality programming with great themes. It is about working hard to achieve a physical and technical challenge. Contestants transform their lives to meet these dancing goals. Everyone who has been on it talks about how physically fit they got, what challenges they had to overcome, how much weight they lost, how fun the technical challenges were, and so on. Even contestants who are professional athletes in their own right have spoken about the athletic aspect of dancing.
I have seen no evidence of backstabbing--everyone on the show laments that anyone had to leave, and compliments their competitors. My understanding is that there is no Simon Cowell-like cockwad judge (Jeff's word), but I don't know that for sure.
The basic elements of the show are physical fitness and appreciation of a the cultural art of dancing. What more could we ask to have piped into the living rooms of Americans, who are often judged as physically unfit and culturally inept? On top of that, men watch this show with their wives, and grown sons watch this show with their parents. You've got families coming together to watch worthwhile television, and you've got males appreciating an art form that is not typically viewed as macho.
Since I actually have no primary knowledge of the show, does anyone care to pipe in either affirming or contradicting my impressions?
