So here's my first post on this livejournal blog.
Lyndsie heckled me to blog and I must oblige. I don't really know how to make this livejournal look decent, hopefully I'll figure it out pretty soon. Here I will be writing my thoughts about stuff, primarily politics, religion, culture (especially classical culture), and complaining about stuff.
In the summer course I'm in now, I am translating the poetry of the Roman philospher Lucretius and his work
De Rerum Natura (On the nature of things). Essentially he explains everything from plagues to love to the nature of the soul in one volume. It's pretty hardcore and a lot of it goes along with my beliefs anyway. He goes off for a long time about how ex nihilo creation is garbage. His disease theory is really darn advanced for the time period and he has lots of insight into the way things work.
In any case, it inspired me to write some latin poetry. All the latin poetry I've seen is in dactylic hexameter and never rhymes. It took me a little while, but heres what I have. There are some latinized english words and added punctuation, otherwise it is kool and the gang.
Canto de Emone Puero
Emonis in cavea puer Emo dolere secatur
Et musica mala. Da se ipse mihi! Nam etiam hae res
Non possunt tui felicitatemque quam videre
Pulchritudinem in amate te. Ique Fugazinem
Audi ut cognoscas naturam rerum omnia quae sint.
Which in translation means...
The Song of Emo Kid
In the Emo cave Emo Kid is cut
by sadness and bad music. Give yourself to me, yourself! For even these things
are not able to see your luck
and beauty, which is in you, beloved. Go and
Listen to Fugazi so that you may know the nature of all things that exist.
So, that was kind of fun. The english translation is a little rough, it makes more sense in latin.
I will have more to say later.
