Golden Snitch! Also, financial aid update

So remember the mittens I made Will for his birthday?  One of his friends saw them and commented, "Wow, you must really like him."  (Well, duh.)

This is what he got me for an (early) birthday present.  (Click to embiggen.)

That's the Golden Snitch spindle from YorkieSlave.  This is one of her "teacup yorkie" spindles, and as such, weighs practically nothing (I'm guessing well under an ounce).  It's also wicked fast - almost too fast, ironically, for me to keep up with the twist.  As is fitting for a Snitch.  I gave it a test drive with some of the blue fiber, and I'm still getting the hang of it.  Mostly I just have to prep the fiber a little better, so I don't have to pause and draft, and I can move my hands fast enough to keep up.

The pretty thing underneath it is a mini batt of fiber that came with the spindle.  (As Will put it, the surprise came with a surprise.)  The card included says it's made of merino, bamboo, and angelina (the gold sparkle).  It reminds me of a tiger's pelt and canyon walls and innumerable other lovely things.  Until I figure out what it wants to be, it's going to remain a petting batt for me to sigh over.

This little speed demon is what I'm using to spin the blue fiber, and what I'll use for the rest of the golden laceweight.  The other spindle (which I've nicknamed "the Clydesdale", since it's such a sturdy workhorse) will be used for heavier singles and for plying.

Needless to say, Will really, really deserves the mittens.

Incidentally, I would like you to observe the following picture:

On the right is the little ball of blue singles.  That's how much I've spun so far.  On the left is the yarntainer, with the fiber I have left to spin.

Now go back and look at the picture of this from a few posts back.

See how the container's still full?  See how there is no change in the amount I have left to spin?!

I think I've discovered a black hole.  Or perhaps a portal to the Rift.  Oy.

Interesting development from Financial Aid.  Remember the problems I've had getting a straight answer to the "WHERE IS MY MONEY" question?  As it turns out, I'm not the only one who's had problems getting aid.  I got an email from the head of my department just the other day.  Turns out I'm getting an equivalent amount this year, without the research assistant position, and it goes away at the end of the school year.  So that's taken care of.

The other development had to do with my full-tuition scholarship.  I had to register for 19 credit hours next quarter.  No way around it; that's part of being an engineer.  Unfortunately, the scholarship only covers 18.  I emailed the office of financial aid, asking for an extension for that last hour, and braced myself for more red tape.

Instead, I got a very polite email from the office within 24 hours.  It was written by an actual person, not a machine.  The email actually explained everything to me about how the scholarship worked and why my email was necessary, and then thanked me for taking the initiative to email them and wished me a happy break.  All in all, very polite and painless.

So, not everything finance-related sucks at WSU.  (Just the Bursar's Office.  Ahahahahaha.)
