Wait, that's not a cucumber!

Late this summer I noticed a cucumber plant growing happily out of my compost pile. I let it go in the hopes that it would produce, but after several weeks of checking I didn't see any baby buds. I wasn't surprised, as I've had problems getting single cuke and gourd plants to produce (I was told it was because they need to germinate with one another).

Anyway, I fell behind in my weeding and did not pull up the lonely cucumber plant, which proceeded to take over not just the compost pile but the pathway to it, the neighbor's fence, and part of my shed. I finally went out this morning to pull up the beast when, lo and behold, I discovered it's not a cucumber plant at all!

I guess I must have composted some decorative fall gourds last year, is all I can figure. Now I've got myself a busy little nursery!
