CPCs -- Thank you, Google, for doing the right thing

A CPC? What the heck is that?

CPC = "crisis pregnancy center". These centers aren't true women's health clinics, but centers for information about abortion and birth control set-up by anti-choice/anti-birth control proponents. Many of these are unregulated and unlicensed clinics that do not respect privacy-protection laws like real doctors and real clinics do. Their agenda: to convince women to turn away from abortion services and birth control use. Consequently, they often present women who come to them with factually inaccurate or falsely misleading information about abortions and birth control. When that doesn't work, they attempt scare tactics that are patently untrue, such as:
  • Birth-control pills cause abortion
  • Abortion causes breast cancer
  • Abortion is psychologically damaging
  • Abortion can lead to sterility

According to NARAL Pro-choice, there are more than 4,000 CPCs across the country. Some CPCs even get support from state governments to mislead women.

News this week regarding CPCs:

From NARAL Pro-Choice:
We discovered that if you Googled "abortion clinic," ads funded by anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) appeared 79 percent of the time on Google. CPCs don't provide or refer for abortion care. CPCs deliberately lie to women to stop them from choosing abortion care, but they took their deception to a new level through manipulative Google ads. These ads are designed to get women to call a CPC instead of a legitimate health-care provider so that an anti-choice "counselor" can lie to and shame them out of ending an unintended pregnancy. Can you even imagine thinking you've found an abortion clinic only to encounter an anti-choice volunteer who challenges your decision and tries to get you to change your mind?

Google's leadership in removing the majority of these ads is a victory for truth in advertising. Countless women will be spared lies and shaming tactics intended to stop them from making their own decisions based on real medical advice.

It won't be long before CPCs and their supporters go after Google for making this change because deceptive ads are one of the primary ways they lure women into their doors. That's why we're organizing a thank-you letter to show Google executives they did the right thing and encourage them to stand strong against pressure from our opponents.

CPCs and their allies will see Google's actions as a direct threat to their business model built on lies. This is the time we need to show Google executives we have their backs for standing up for truthful advertising.

Sign our thank-you note to Google now.

We'll continue to work with Google executives to ensure that women are directed to the resources and services they are seeking when they search online. Our work isn't over, but this first step is a significant victory we should all celebrate.

Thank you for all you do to make choice real for women and families.
