Chapter 13

It was his favorite time of day, early enough in the morning that he didn't have to get up yet and could enjoy the quiet before the hallways filled with the sounds of people waking up for the day and other just coming in from a late night.  He let his mind drift...he was having a lovely dream about a strong pair of arms, a very wicked mouth, and the the clearest blue eyes. Not much else to it, really, and he luxuriated in the pleasant feelings.  A loud beeping sound slashed through the silence, bringing him back fully to the world of conscious people.

"Jack," Alonso mumbled, still half-asleep. "Jack. Your wrist thing is beeping." He buried his face under the pillow, trying to block the noise. Damn thing.

"My 'wrist thing'?" Jack asked in amusement as he stepped out of the bathroom, fresh from his shower, but Alonso's only reply was a soft snore. He had gone back to sleep.

Captain Jack Harkness smiled fondly at the younger man. Alonso was a sweet kid who had certainly done a world of good for Jack, rescuing  him from the guilty, self-destructing path his grief had set him on. And the fact that he was gorgeous and an excellent lover was just icing on the cake. He pressed a quick kiss on Alonso's cheek, before retrieving his Vortex Manipulator, which was indeed beeping. He tapped a few keys and a holographic image of Archie Poe's head floated in front of him

"Jack, I really hope you get this." the man said rushed, glancing behind him. The image pixelated and cut out for a second before resuming. "We have a situation and we need your help. Dr. Martha Jones found something terrible--terrible and dangerous and she needs you to protect it." Jack could hear the noise in the background, a blaring security alarm, a door busting open and gunshots. Archie looked more worried and fearful with each passing second. "It's Ianto, Jack! You need to keep him safe! Come back to Earth! Fast!"

Jack's heart stopped and for a second, so did the world.  Ianto.  He hadn't allowed himself to really dwell on...Ianto...in months.  Not for lack of desire, but more for his own sanity.  Ianto now occupied a dark corner of his heart with Steven and Alice, Owen and Tosh, and so many others he rarely allowed himself to examine in any depth--it hurt too much.  Things had been getting better recently, mostly with Alonso's company.  Neither one of them could make a half-decent cup of coffee to save their lives, but the Alarian milky tea was okay and the conversation infinitely better.  That helped, some. And that was the nature of time, wasn't it?  That eventually, the edges of the pain dull and the colors of the photographs fade and the details of the old stories blur together in a kind of foggy memory of what once was.  The scenery shifts and the next time you take a look at where you are, it's the familiarly alien trappings of a space station.  Back out amongst the stars, like you'd never left and got yourself stuck on a little backwater planet for over a century waiting and loving and losing and still waiting for someone who might not even come and finding yourself smitten--smitten!--with the devilishly handsome young man who brings you coffee and innuendo each morning before a long day of Weevil hunting and alien tech and running around like nutters, half-crazy and exhilarated. And yet...there you were, and there was The Doctor, and there was Alonso seated next to you looking forlorn but oh-so devilishly handsome. It's the same but different.

The message cut out; Archie's pleading face evaporated into nothingness as Jack stared, dumbfounded. And the cacophony of sound--doors slamming, footfalls along the hallway, snatches of conversations and the sounds of running and laughter as people passed by the closed door--invaded once more. Life rushed at him with such force, he hadn't felt it like this in so long. Jack jumped to his feet, rummaging around for his clothes. He needed to go back to Earth, find out what was going on. Help Martha. Was it true?  He didn't want to hope, but he knew that was an impossible feat. Find Ianto.  He had to find out about Ianto.

"You're going?" Jack jerked in surprise, pants half on and left hand poking through the shirt sleeve, and turned to look at a fully awake Alonso. "Back to Earth?"

"Er.. yes." He answered, avoiding the man's blue eyes and sliding his right arm into the other sleeve. How could he possibly being to explain?

"Ianto... you say that name sometimes, and others, when you're having bad dreams." Jack felt his throat constrict. He hadn't known he'd been calling out for his dead lover in his sleep. Or Steven, or any of them. He remained facing away as he finished buttoning the shirt and pulling up his pants the rest of the way. He really hoped Alonso wasn't put out by it; he'd been the first regular company Jack had since, well...

"I have to go," he answered simply, choosing to ignore the man's previous statement.

"Can I come?" Alonso asked quietly.

"Why would you want to come with me?"

"I've never been on Earth before," the young man remarked with a shrug. "Been in orbit once, but I don't think that really counts.  Kinda like saying you've been to Woman Wept, but really you were just in the space port looking down."

"It's not a vacation, Alonso. Judging by Archie's message, it will be really dangerous." He sat down on the bed, sort of facing Alonso and sort of not.

"I don't mind." Another shrug.

"I do," Jack replied, dragging Alonso into a desperate kiss. "I don't want you to get hurt because of me." Don't want to add you to the list.  Looked at him straight in the eyes.

"Jack, I'm hardly a delicate hothouse flower," he said with an eye roll reminiscent of Ianto at his most annoyed. "I have military training."

"That doesn't mean you'll be safe. You better stay, Alonso. I've seen too many good people die because of me." There was a terrible pain in Jack's eyes. It made Alonso's heart ache.

Jack pressed a tender kiss against his forehead and stood up, taking Alonso's silence as the end of the discussion. He finished dressing, shrugged on his greatcoat and strapped his gun, before the other man said another word.

"You're going to need a ship," Alonso said with a hint of a smirk. "I have a ship, Captain." Jack eyed him, full of suspicion.  He was too saucy by half sometimes when he got in the right mood.

"What are you suggesting?"

"I'm just offering to take you there," he replied with a careless shrug.

"Oh, no. I'm not falling for that. If I let you go, you won't just stay in the ship, you'll want to come down too." Oh, if the Doctor could hear him now.

"So just let me come." When Jack sent a leering smirk his way, Alonso blushed a little and rolled her eyes. "You know what I mean. I can help you, Jack."

Jack stood in the middle of the room considering Alonso's words. He really didn't want to put the man in danger, but he couldn't do it alone either. Going back to Earth--it was too much to really process. It still hurt, but Alonso made it at least a little more bearable.  It was pure selfishness on his part really, risking Alonso's life because he couldn't face going back to Earth alone, but Jack had long since made peace with the fact that he was a selfish bastard.

"Okay. You can come with me." Alonso grinned.

"Great. I'll get ready." He pulled Jack into a passionate kiss, before disappearing inside the bathroom, leaving Jack to his own thoughts.

---

Martha and Mackenzie caught up with Ianto and Mickey as they bolted from the armory with automatic handguns in all of their hands and as many magazines of ammo as them could stuff in their pockets.

"Where's Archie?" Ianto asked, noticing the distinct lack of yelling and cursing. Martha looked away.

"He's not coming. Which way to the underground garage?"

"What? He can't stay--those men aren't the types who ask questions first." Martha's face clouded with sorrow and regret.

"I know, but someone needs to lock down the place."

"We can't just leave him!" Ianto was livid.

"Ianto! He made his choice. You think I wanted it this way? This is bigger than us, and the most important thing right now is to keep you as far away from these guys as we can. Arthur is making a sacrifice so we can escape. I don't like it either, but sometimes... sometimes we need to leave those we care about behind and pray they end up okay."

Her expression darkened as she seemed to be remembering something long repressed, and Ianto was at a loss. He had seen that look before, several times actually, in Jack's eyes. He never really knew any of the details about Jack's time away with the Doctor, but he learned over time that there was really nothing to be done for it but just be there when Jack needed him and not force the issue.

"This way," he said as the sounds of something heavy crashing on the ground echoed above them.

Ianto leaded the way through a maze of corridors down to lower levels of Torchwood Two.  Torchwood loved their incomprehensible mazes of underground corridors. He paused just outside the door marked "Garage: Level II" and cursed loudly in Welsh at the sight of the automatic locks complete with keypad.

"We need the code," he informed, looking back. Just then, the door emitted a series of clicks as the locks released and the door slid open.  Ianto looked up at the CCTV camera aimed down on them and threw Archie a grin.  No one barged into Archie Poe's HQ without a fight.

"Let's go!" Mickey urged, dragging him by the arm. The sound of the soldiers' heavy steps weren't far behind them. "Martha, you drive!" Mackenzie quickly threw Martha the SUV keys Archie had given her, and Martha unlocked the car and practically threw herself in the driver's seat. "Mackenzie, take cover," Mickey ordered while shoving her in.

"Archie said it was bulletproof," she said as she tumbled in.

"Exactly, it is JUST bulletproof," Mickey said, taking the front passenger's seat.

"What else is there?!"

"Best guess...lasers? Maybe some kind of sonic modulator? Who knows what they managed to get before Archie started locking them out," Ianto provided as he slid in next to her, slamming the door.

"Awesome, I walked into a bloody sci-fi movie with the happy-fun bunch," Mackenzie muttered as Martha gunned the engine and tore down the lane toward the entrance gate. Just as they approached, the gates swung back seemingly of their own accord.

"Thanks Archie," Martha said under her breath and stepped hard on the gas. Their best chance was to put as much distance between themselves and Torchwood Two's HQ as they could before their enemy noticed they were gone. Unfortunately, they didn't manage to go unnoticed for long. The military team probably had eyes on the garage gates because soon enough, they were tailing Team Fugitive.  They weren't exactly light on fire power either, if the near constant hail of bullets was anything to go by.

"Martha, floor it! We need to get rid of them," Mickey urged.

"I'm trying," she ground out, "but this is as fast as I can manage."

Ianto turned to look at the SUV chasing them and back to road ahead. They were headed towards the city proper; they needed to loose the tail now. He lowered the window and, getting a tight grip on the lip of the door, hoisted himself half-way out of the window facing toward the tailing SUV.

"Ianto what the hell are you doing!?" Mickey yelled, but the other man ignored him, lifting his gun and taking aim.

The first two shots were unsuccessful. Their car was moving too much and the other still too far away, he couldn't hold his aim. Ianto took a deep breath and tried again, focusing all of his attention on the tires. He felt a weird, tingling sensation in his eyes and suddenly, it was like someone had slid magnifying glasses over them. He could see every detail of the car. He shot the right front tire, and this time the bullet hit its target perfectly. Ianto grinned and shot again, hitting the left one. The car swerved wildly over both lanes on the road before taking a sharp right off the side of the road into a hedgerow. Ianto was amazingly pleased with himself, bought them a little more time without having to shoot anyone.

He let out a sharp laugh as Martha steered the car back into the proper lane, thanking every deity in every universe that they were all still alive. Ianto was distracted enough that he missed a soldier climbing out of the car and pulling out his gun and randomly shooting in their direction. The sound of the wind rushing by his ears covered the noise. All he felt was the excruciating pain in his right shoulder emanating down his arm and across his chest as he sagged against the side of the car, nearly falling out of it.

"Pull him in!" Ianto heard Mickey yell and felt shaky hands trying to pull him back in. After a few awkward tugs, Mackenzie managed to get him completely inside and closed the window.

"Are you insane!?" she shouted, hands already probing the wound in his shoulder. He hissed in pain. "You could had fallen off. You could have died! You're all fucking bonkers, the lot of you!!"

"Don't need to yell," he managed to say, through clenched teeth. "I'm right here."

"Assessment!" Martha barked. Ianto could hear the desperation on her voice.

"One GSW to the right shoulder--no exit wound. I think it's probably lodged in his clavicle or scapula." Mackenzie looked up and met Martha's eyes on the rear view mirror. "He's bleeding, I can't tell how much--"

"Use whatever you've got to apply pressure and slow it down. We'll stop as soon as we can." Martha stopped her before she freaked herself out.

Mackenzie nodded and eased Ianto on his back, placing his head on her lap so she could keep pressure on his wound and staunch the blood flow. He already looked pale and disorientated as Mackenzie spoke to him in a soft voice, trying to keep him conscious. Martha watched the scene gripping the wheel so hard that her knuckles turned white. She was not going to let Ianto die. Not again! Not when he had just come back.
