61. Pathetic
Gwen takes one look at Merlin and sighs heavily, before lying by her side on the bed. She can hear the faint accords of Everything You Want drifting from Merlin’s ear buds.
“Oh honey, you look pathetic.” She states with a sad smile and Merlin glares.
“You’re not helping.” Merlin complains pouting.
“The only person who can help you is the 6’1’, blue eyed blonde who lives next door.”
“Gwen.” Merlin says in warning.
“Oh, don’t ‘Gwen’ me!” She says irritated. “You’re being stupid, Merlin!”
“My mother is dating his father! Do you have any idea how weird that is?” Merlin protests, glaring again.
“So? It’s not like they’re getting married! And even if they were it wouldn’t change anything.”
“Of course it would! It already does!”
“No it doesn’t! It won’t make you and Arthur siblings or whatever.”
Gwen sighs again and wraps her arms around Merlin, resting her chin on her best friend’s shoulder.
“You love him.” She says quietly, noticing how Merlin looks away to avoid eye contact. “You’ve been waiting for him your entire life.”
“That’s not true.” Gwen rolls her eyes.
“Remember Daniel Akins, fifth grade?” She asks and Merlin nods. “And Simon Baker, eighth?” Merlin nods again. “Remember what they all had in common?”
Merlin groans, squeezing her eyes shut.
“Blue eyed blondes. Oh God, I’m so pathetic!” Gwen laughs heartedly and pats Merlin’s thigh.
“Face it girl, you got it bad.” Merlin only pouts, sulking. “The sooner you stop being an idiot and talk to Arthur, the sooner you’ll feel better.”
“I can’t. I have to think about mom too. I’ve never seen her so happy.”
Gwen rolls her eyes and stands up.
“Here’s a thought, Merlin. Have you asked your mother if it bothers her you dating her boyfriend’s son?” The other girl’s silence is answer enough. “That’s what I thought. Don’t just assume she minds, ask her. You might have a surprise.”
