Now if LJ would get its shit together. Every time I reload or move to another page I get a page reset error, then it loads fine the second time.
So, I had a very busy holiday weekend, still didn't get half the stuff done I was supposed to, and pretty much failed to post here.
It started sadly with the passing of an old friend's father (also a very good friend of my parents'--I'd known him all my life practically)--from a cerebral hemorrhage he suffered the week before. He was in a coma and wasn't going to come out of it so they took him off life support. His kids and wife were able to visit--his son was actually coming here the next day to visit for the holiday.
As Dar said, we're at the age where the friends of our parents are now passing away.
...
Thursday started bright and early with making the pumpkin pie and burning my croissants--luckily I had a four pack--because the temp to start the pie is like 450 and I put them in with it. I really need to clean my top oven so I can use it to bake this season. Maybe I'll do that tonight. (They're self-cleaning; I'm still lazy about it.) I watched the parade and managed to stay awake even though I didn't sleep well. One of those nights where I woke up around 3:00 and really didn't sleep after that. The Rockettes kicked; I cheered. Santa arrived; I cheered, though I miss the swan sleigh. After the parade I made the Waldorf Salad and headed to the parents'.
Mom had a vertigo spell shortly before I got there so she was in a tetchy mood--also a good friend from high school had also died the day before--but calmed down by meal time. Everything turned out wonderful. About five years ago I found a recipe for a cider/apple turkey with cider gravy and we've made it ever since. You stuff the bird with apples and onions and baste it with cider that's then used in the gravy. I've never liked anything but white gravy but I love this. Pies were both good. The sugar free cool whip tasted exactly like regular.
Dad and I watched the KU/Wake Forest game in the basement. It was good, we won, but not great. Precursor?
I went home and promptly napped for three hours. Watched sports, read fanfic, the usual.
Mom was determined to do Black Friday but we didn't start until 8:00 and it was pretty much calm by then. We stood in a short line at Michaels but none at World Market or Bed Bath & Beyond. There was no need to go to Penneys so we avoided that. Mom had me drive since it's hard for her to turn her head, so we headed downtown. I hadn't been able to find anything about any early openings, but the department store opens at 9:30. I got dad a belt and slippers; mom found herself a really pretty gold sweater. *g* We tend to buy stuff for ourselves more than anyone else, especially since we pretty much order everything for brother's family and have it delivered there.
I moved the car every block--no problem parking--and picked mom up once. A couple shops have added dogs that all came to sniff my cat smell. *g* This is one of the things I love about our vibrant downtown with mostly local shops (we do have a Gap, Claires, a couple other chains): Pets and also people you've known for years who work in them/own them. Mom pointed out a few things, but mostly dad has bought everything for her and so have I. I did find a couple cute mice at once store, so I might drag him there.
We had lunch at the old hotel--they make really good tomato bisque; I had a half grilled cheese with it. Mom had an angus beef burger without the bun and cheese, and sweet potato fries. We had managed to get a parking spot right across the street and the only shops we were going to were right on the corners with the hotel being on one as well. In one I found the perfect chair for my living room for just under a thousand bucks. *sigh* So tempted.
Then we headed back out south of town to Pier One because we always forget to go there in the morning--I think it's because we avoid Target and it's on an access road in front of it. I got a new kissing ball with silver glitter on it.
We were done by like 1:30. Then I napped. Then KU lost in an atrociously refed game to Villanova (we also shot like shit from every aspect).
Saturday started bright and early with getting my hair cut and colored, then KU football lost to KSU which was not a surprise but the six turnovers, a couple on possible scoring drives, really killed us. Also getting quickly behind 21-0. *sigh* Well, that's over with for another year. No season tickets next year; maybe if we'd beaten ISU last week. Oh, and ISU won so we're dead last in the Big 12, but we did win two games more than last year. Hope springs eternal?
I caught up on some tv, watched more sports, read fanfic, did not decorate. Then KU barely squeaked out a win against UTEP for gods sake (who had been stomped by Iowa in the previous game) in the consolation game. We definitely should never go back to the Bahamas. One, I think the low ceiling and weird ass blue lighting did not help with shooting perspectives. Also the refs sucked. In this game, they called it like a game of last year. In the second half, neither team got into the bonus until about five minutes left! How can you prepare for a game when you have no idea what's going to be a foul?
On Sunday, I blew off church with the plan to write except I, of course, read fanfic. *sigh* I did get some writing done before the Chiefs lost to Denver. *sigh* Then AO3 started mucking up and I watched Sunday night tv. Wowsa Walking Dead!
Oh, I also got all caught up on Xmen comics, finally! And I signed up for fandom stocking. I have one fic that's due next Sunday (rough draft) that's about 2/3 done, but one due the following Sunday that I only have about 1000 words on and a lot more to go. And I need to go through Wishlists and start filling wishes.
Christmas is just over three weeks away. No way I'll be ready. Tonight I need to bake pumpkin bread, decide on what other breads to bake, put about five boxes worth of comics together and carry those down to storage, bring up Christmas stuff, and...try not to go nuts. At least I only have one tv show tonight, so I'll put on sports of some kind.
I feel so very behind already.
