The reason that Basketball doesn't matter is because the contracts and laws. The NCAA owns the basketball tournament rights, and makes all of the big money that comes in from Bball. So as long as you are in a league that gets many tourney bids, it doesn't matter which one. You don't need to shop for a deal.

On the other hand, the conferences control all the TV contracts for football. So it's a big deal for conferences to recruit schools that will bring in more revenue in the next TV deal.

I totally hate this stuff, mind you. It's ruined the ACC for me. Not to mention how idiotic these continent spanning leagues are for non-revenue sports. The WAC expanded to 16 in the 90s and it was a disaster. (BYU, UTA, etc split back out to form the Mountain West...)

The conferences are killing me. They no longer make any geographical sense at all.

I feel your Chiefs and Jayhawks football pain. All my college teams are sucking wind this year. My 'Skins are shocking everyone. So far. I'm just waiting for the inevitable collapse.
