Life, Part 1

I remember when I used to update this journal every day, sometimes more than once. I remember expressing concerns once to Chris that if I talked about all the interesting things on my mind to him and everyone else in person, I would have NOTHING to write in LJ, and that just wouldn't do! My, how times have changed.

(Remarking on how I've neglected this journal is a very original opener, I know.)

I'm going to make a nice neat list of stuff that's gone down in my life in the past however many weeks. Some of these deserved a whole entry, but oh well.

(1) The other VCA hospitals in the area are converting over to the "VSI" computer system which my hospital has always used. This means that people who are familiar with VSI can sign up for shifts with overtime APPROVED (gasp) at other VCAs and help train. I didn't feel like doing Whitman or Hanson, but I decided to go all out and sign up for a bunch of shifts at Hanover (VCA Roberts). At first, I was peeved because a got a call the Sunday before Memorial Day and was told they didn't need me. I would have gotten double time for an 8 hour shift! But after working Sunday and Monday this week, I am thankful as hell that I didn't sign up for more shifts.

I found the people at Roberts to be rather unfriendly. I understand that they're probably bitter about having to learn their jobs all over again on a shitty computer system, but that wasn't my decision, and not introducing yourself, saying hi, or even looking up when I walk in isn't going to make VSI feel bad and go away. One bitchy doctor chastised me when I asked what to do with a file--look lady, I'm trying to help you and your woefully understaffed front desk, and since no one wanted to spend 8 seconds showing me what to do with a file after a client checked out, I figured I'd ask instead of just dropping it in a toilet or something. GUESS I'VE LEARNED MY LESSON! There was new girl who had literally just been hired, and no one felt like training her or really even paying attention to her, so she clung to me since I had spoken more than 5 words to er while making eye contact. That's fine, the problem was that even though I repeated at least 5 times that I DO NOT WORK AT ROBERTS she kept asking me questions about Roberts! The second day I worked, I asked her how to do a check in, and halfway through it, she started asking ME what to do! What the hell? I felt like I was in Bizarro world, like, didn't I just ask YOU to show ME? And didn't I say I don't work here??!! She also wouldn't stop taking about her dog and asking me if I remembered her from a year ago when she was "really sick" and came to Weymouth. Girl, do you know how many yellow labs I see on any given day? Whatever, I did feel bad for her. I guess ignoring new hires is a VCA company wide tradition.

Sunday got to be so boring that I left 2 hours early, and Monday was so busy I thought I was going to scream and kick one of the many barking dogs in their cramped lobby. I'm glad the experience is over and I at least got some extra money out of it.

(2) I saw "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". It was a pretty good movie except that it effed up the continuity of the original trio a little bit. Like, why did Sabretooth treat Wolverine like a stranger in X-Men if he's his brother and had tried to murder him before? And that whole nonsense about an adamantium bullet erasing Logan's memory was just poop. The movie was better than X-Men 3, worse than X-men 2, so I guess it kind of fits in the same category as X-men.

(3) "Star Trek", on the other hand, was great! I went into the movie not really expecting to like or care about it very much, since I've never liked or cared about Star Trek, but I was sucked in at the very first scene of the Romulan ship emerging like a spiny space monster from a black hole. Every character was entertaining and I laughed aloud more than once. The plot itself was kind of messed up because it involved time travel and other wacky dimensional hooha, but meh. The scene where the doctor chases Kirk around, stabbing him with needles makes up for any nonsensical story elements such as present Spock and future Spock existing simultaneously.

(4) "Up" was my most recent movie--I saw it Monday. I'm a big fan of Pixar, and this movie continued their tradition of delivering quality entertainment. It was written with sincere, real emotion; the first 15 minutes made several people in the theater cry. The 2 main animal characters, Kevin the bird and Doug the dog, were cute and funny. Unfortunately, the story lost me about 1/3 of the way through. It started out simple, but got a bit...weird and outlandish, with the old dude's childhood hero turning out to be a psycho with an army of talking dogs in South America. I definitely liked Wall-E better, but Up makes for a good time, too.

I'm getting tired, so part 2 will come tomorrow....I promise.
