Colman wished to imitate the life of Jesus Christ in the wilderness. So he lived in a remote cave and had remote possessions - apart from his Bible.

Many saints start as soldiers and end as priests. St. Albert of Louvain (1166-1192) did it differently. He started a religious life at twelve, became a soldier at twenty-one and returned to work for the church. His military life did not last long, but thing is that he tried it.
